As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of gaming and binge-watching Netflix shows, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of Squid Game: Unleashed. The idea of merging two of my favorite pastimes into one exciting experience is simply too enticing to resist.

The eagerly-awaited game tied to the hit Netflix series, “Squid Game,” titled “Squid Game: Unbound,” is set to debut for iOS and Android users on December 17. This production comes from Netflix Games, marking another one of their popular shows, such as “Stranger Things,” to venture into the video game realm. Unlike previous games, it will not be restricted to Netflix subscribers upon its initial release.

Over the last several years, Netflix has been gradually expanding its focus on gaming. This includes purchasing game development studios and recruiting high-level executives to develop their gaming division. During this period, they’ve taken popular shows like “Money Heist” and “Narcos” and turned them into games, offering these as part of the subscription package. Simultaneously, popular games such as “GTA: San Andreas” and “Hades” have been made accessible to Netflix subscribers. Lately, Netflix has been actively marketing its upcoming game, “Squid Game: Unleashed“, which is set to launch just before the second season of “Squid Game“.

At The Game Awards 2024, Netflix showcased a fresh trailer for “Squid Game: Unleashed.” This sneak peek offered fans another glimpse at the game’s diverse stages, including the glass bridge, borrowed from the original concept. Furthermore, during this unveiling, it was announced that when the online multiplayer title debuts on December 17 across both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, it will be free for all users, unlike previous Netflix games. Consequently, even those who are not subscribers can enjoy “Squid Game: Unleashed.” Additionally, this game, now available for pre-registration, is also devoid of advertisements or in-app purchases, much like other titles released by Netflix.

Squid Game: Unleashed Joins Netflix’s Growing List of Video Games

Titled “Squid Game: Unleashed“, this new game promises intense competition among 32 players vying for a virtual reward, making it an exciting newcomer to Netflix’s expanding gaming library. Notably, Netflix’s roster of games already features well-known video game franchises such as Street Fighter, Civilization, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Tomb Raider. More are anticipated to join this list, as suggested by Netflix’s July earnings report, which revealed that over 80 games were currently in development for their streaming platform.

Before the premiere of “Squid Game 2” on December 26, this video game tie-in isn’t the only collaboration Netflix is using to generate excitement for the new season. Earlier in November, “Call of Duty” announced a partnership with “Squid Game,” which includes themed content within “Black Ops 6” and “Warzone” as part of the deal. Additionally, there’s an upcoming collaboration with Xbox that will allow players to obtain Squid Game edition controllers, starting from December 20.
