The highly-anticipated third season of “Squid Game” is due out in two months, and one of its stars has given fans a hint about what’s in store.
The television series titled “Squid Game” hails from South Korea and premiered on Netflix in September 2021. Critics have highly praised it for its engaging narrative, strong acting, and thought-provoking social commentary about issues such as inequality, capitalism, and human desperation. This show took the number one spot on Netflix for several weeks, making it the most watched non-English program available on the streaming platform. The second season of “Squid Game” was equally successful, ranking as the second most popular non-English series on Netflix. Excitingly, fans will soon get to see how Gi-hun’s story concludes in Season 3, which is scheduled for release in a few weeks.
Lee Jung-jae, who plays the lead character Gi-hun in the series, revealed some insights about the show. He mentioned that while all seasons were tough to film, the final season presented the greatest challenge for him. In an interview with Motion Pictures, he described Season 1 as a demanding experience for Gi-hun, both physically and mentally. Furthermore, there was a specific game he found particularly challenging during the first season – the game that fans will recognize as Squid Game. However, Jung-jae hinted that the most difficult aspect might be something eagerly anticipated by viewers in Season 3. He stated:
“I’d say that the most challenging game I had to act out was the last game of the first season, which is the Squid Game.”
But, he suggested that there’s something even more difficult for Gi-hun yet to come, which fans should be excited to see unfold in Season 3.
Among all seasons combined, I find that the final round from Season 3 posed the greatest challenges and difficulties. It was particularly tough to film.
It’s no surprise that Jung-jae struggled to film the final round of Squid Game in Season 1, given the unique nature of the game itself. In South Korea, Squid Game is a well-known children’s game where participants are divided into two teams – attackers and defenders. The court resembles a squid, hence the name “Squid Game.” The defenders can run on two feet within the court, while the attackers start outside and can only hop on one foot until they reach the squid’s neck. The final battle is won by tapping the top of the court with your foot.
In Season 1, Squid Game was the decisive round, and it pitted Gi-hun against his childhood friend, Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo). With victory in sight, Gi-hun chose to halt the game to save Sang-woo. Only one could win and survive to claim the cash prize. Sang-woo was already defeated and opted to forfeit, allowing Gi-hun to take the money instead of him. This selfless act likely made filming this intense scene a challenging task.
1. Jung-jae is correct in pointing out that Squid Game is tough to play. Firstly, the players must hop on one foot for balance, which adds difficulty. Secondly, since it’s a physical game involving pushing, shoving, and wrestling, doing so while balancing on one foot makes it even more demanding, especially for characters like Jung-jae’s Gihun who chose offense.
2. Furthermore, the court lines are drawn closely together, necessitating quickness and strategy to win. In essence, speed, technique, and fast reflexes are crucial for success. The brutal adaptation of childhood games in Netflix’s Squid Game makes it exhausting on multiple levels – physically, emotionally, and mentally.
3. However, Jung-jae hinted that the final round in Season 3 will be even more challenging, sparking curiosity among fans about what game he could be referring to. As for the games featured in Squid Game Season 3, details remain secret. Rumors suggest possible inclusions of Monkey Bars and a new version of Jack and Jill. No matter which games are chosen for the finale, one thing is certain – it will have a deadly twist.
Squid Game Season 3 premieres on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
