The highly acclaimed South Korean survival drama series, Squid Game, is gearing up for its third and concluding season. This last chapter aims to resolve any outstanding plot points within the show.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator and director behind “Squid Game”, has gained widespread recognition due to the show’s success. Yet, his path was not an easy one as he encountered numerous rejections for over a decade before finally finding a platform on Netflix. Intriguingly, it has been hinted by one of the stars that Dong-hyuk will provide answers to fans’ lingering questions in the upcoming “Squid Game” Season 3.
As Lee Jung-jae, the captivating protagonist of “Squid Game,” I’ve shared some insights about our highly anticipated second season following its release on Netflix. The team and I are thrilled with the overwhelming success we’ve experienced, but I understand that some fans felt let down due to the abrupt ending and shorter season length. However, rest assured that Season 3 is in the works and will provide answers to many of your lingering questions. I can’t wait for you all to witness Gi-hun’s evolution in this final chapter. He finds himself in a perilous game with the intention of saving lives, yet faces numerous obstacles that ultimately lead him to rock bottom. The journey ahead will be exhilarating as we explore how he overcomes these challenges. Remember, I was honored with an Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series for my performance in Season 1, and I’m excited to continue this incredible ride with you all!
In another conversation, Dong-hyuk discussed plans for Squid Game Season 3 with a different media outlet. The director explained he intended to conclude Gi-hun’s narrative in the series, stating, “I view the third season as the conclusion of this story. I feel that I’ve found closure for the tale I wanted to convey about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun,” he expressed to The Hollywood Reporter.
The director made it clear that after Squid Game Season 3, we won’t see more of Gi-hun, but he left open the possibility for potential spinoffs. He suggested that if he were to revisit the world of Squid Game, it would be through new characters and their unique storylines. “Perhaps in the future, I might return to the realm of Squid Game, focusing on different individuals with distinct narratives. Maybe a spinoff, possibly involving the masked guards – exploring how they came to be there, or what they do during their free time,” the series creator hinted.
It’s reasonable to expect that any fan questions regarding Gi-hun will likely be answered in the upcoming final season. On the other hand, the backstory of the masked guards could potentially be delved into in a future spinoff series and may not be part of Squid Game Season 3 itself. Showrunner Dong-hyuk’s explanation makes sense, as many viewers might agree that the first two seasons primarily focused on Gi-hun, and with Season 3 being announced as the conclusion, they may choose to wrap up his storyline while expanding upon other aspects of Squid Game through spinoffs. However, since it is the final season, there will be no time left to explore the backstory of the masked guards or the Front Man, as the audience will first need to confront the aftermath of Gi-hun’s rebellion, which ended dramatically in a cliffhanger.
Squid Game Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix and Season 3 will be released this year.
