As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the release of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been a rollercoaster ride, to put it mildly. With countless hours spent navigating the post-apocalyptic wasteland, I’ve encountered my fair share of challenges – but nothing quite like the thumbstick woes that have plagued controller users.
With so many players jumping into Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl, people are bound to find issues. Quality Assurance departments put in hundreds of hours to find every issue they can, but nothing compares to thousands of fans all playing at once. QA can only do so much.
And yet, some issues just leave people scratching their head.
Individuals opting for playing Stalker 2 with a controller might encounter a minor problem: the right joystick seems to malfunction.
One could also say that the character exhibits unpredictable or abrupt changes in direction, with their view constantly darting and shifting, even with minimal stimuli.
At present, there are two individuals under suspicion in relation to this issue. It is plausible that both could account for the game not functioning smoothly with controllers. The first potential reason might be due to a problem known as stick drift. The second possibility could stem from an insufficient “deadzone” adjustment setting.
Stick drift is something that happens to controllers as they age. Some more than others.
When gaming controllers have been used for a while and encounter some wear, they might occasionally interpret even the slightest movement as a deliberate input, leading to gradual on-screen directional drift in your gameplay. That’s why it’s named “drift.
The deadzone issue is a bit more technical, but also easier to simplify. In short, most games have an anti-stick-drift feature that diminishes the strength of weak inputs. Perhaps erasing them entirely, if the player desires.
Applying a deadzone means that small movements with the controller stick result in minimal action within the game. However, if you push the stick forcefully to one side, it provides enough movement. To adjust the sensitivity, most games offer an option for you to set the level of responsiveness according to your preference.
In a situation without a deadzone, it becomes challenging to distinguish minor movements, such as those caused by stick drift, from the maximum movement the game can produce. Essentially, this means that small and large movements are indistinguishable, leading to a frustrating gaming experience where issues compound each other in the most detrimental way possible.
Stalker 2 Devs Respond To Game Issues
The creators of Stalker 2 have issued a statement addressing numerous issues players have encountered with the game thus far. Although they don’t specifically mention the controller problem (since there are multiple glitches affecting the project currently), they assure us that they will work diligently to rectify these problems swiftly.
Considering the… slightly more immediate problems facing a Ukrainian development studio, things like a buggy release seem like a fairly forgivable problem to have. GSC Game World clearly wants to push out hotfixes as soon as they’re able, and players seem receptive to the idea.
At the moment, there isn’t a specific schedule for when the fixes will be rolled out directly to players. However, the overall vibe suggests that everyone is eagerly waiting for them to arrive “as quickly as can be managed”.
