As a seasoned Stalker traversing the treacherous expanse of the Zone, I’ve faced my fair share of mutated horrors lurking in the shadows. But none have ever filled me with dread quite like the beasts I’m about to describe.
In The Zone, there are numerous marvels, yet it would be challenging to locate a stalker who considers mutants as one of those wonders.
In the game “STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl“, mutants primarily function in two roles: they either attack and potentially kill you, or they deplete your resources, leaving you vulnerable for a mutant or stalker to ultimately finish you off.
These abominations are everywhere you look, especially if there is a stash or objective nearby.
This list aids in identifying the type of mutation you’re encountering and offers efficient ways to eliminate it. Happy hunting, tracker.
14 Rodent
Death By A Thousand Bites
A tushkano, a rodent, or a hamster – they’re essentially the same creature. These tiny pests may not inflict significant harm, but they can certainly be a major nuisance for someone navigating through the wilderness.
Rodents often inhabit groups that can surpass two dozen individuals, and they tend to move about in confined areas such as sewer systems or subterranean passages.
As a gamer, I find myself often up against foes that can jump to great heights, making escape by climbing impractical. Moreover, their tendency to gather in groups poses a challenge when trying to eliminate them with explosives, as survival demands careful strategy and precision.
A simple method for dealing with a large number of rodents is to use a shotgun, firing it into the area to scatter pellets.
As a gamer, nothing sets my nerves on edge quite like the moment when I accidentally reveal my location to enemy stalkers and mutants, thanks to a mutant giant rat losing control of its bloodthirsty instincts.
13 Blind Dog
Not Your Mama’s Puppy
A guide dog, unlike a typical street dog in your community, has developed exceptional senses of smell and hearing in place of its eyesight.
Dogs without sight can effectively maneuver around obstacles and are challenging to get rid of once they’re tracking you. They possess a relatively weak health level and delicate skin that can be pierced by common 9x18mm Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) bullets.
Typically, they approach, nip at you a few times, then scamper away to change positions. Although a blind dog’s bite isn’t usually fatal, it often results in cuts and bleeding.
The majority of fatalities among sightless dogs result when they’re surrounded by predators, who inflict injuries that are not promptly treated due to their extended struggle. To prevent such an outcome, consider finding a secure vantage point and eliminating the threat if necessary.
12 Flesh
The Leaping Crab Pigs
In days gone by, the casual jest about the inhabitants of the Zone was now a formidable adversary. Typically, they were found traveling together in groups of four to six individuals.
These half-crustacean, half-pig creatures don’t inflict heavy damage on stalkers, but they are swift movers and can leap from a reasonable distance to strike you.
In the game “STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl,” the flesh poses a relentless threat. It persistently scratches and attacks you, with the outcome being that either it or you perish from this continuous onslaught.
As a gamer, I can tell you that this particular foe doesn’t have any notable weak points or shielding, so if you’re looking to conserve your primary firepower, old reliable Skif’s PTM should be able to get the job done just fine.
Another option is that since the flesh lacks a strong awareness of abnormalities, disguising oneself as an anomaly while attacking continues to be a feasible strategy.
11 Boar
Hostile, Hungry, And Tanky
In my gaming world, I’ve come to find that the wild boars in this zone are remarkably unchanged by whatever strange forces are at play here. However, it’s become quite a nuisance for us explorers, or ‘stalkers’, as they seem to have developed an unusual craving for human flesh.
Generally, you’ll find wild boars moving together in small bands that can consist of anywhere from two to five individuals. Due to their limited sensory abilities, there may be occasions when it’s feasible to approach them stealthily without provoking a confrontation.
Wild pigs tend to charge at their targets with their sharp tusks or use their heads to butt them, but they usually opt for the head-butting technique more often. During confrontations, they keep moving to maximize the effectiveness of this method.
As a fervent admirer, I can attest that a wild boar’s charge is formidable indeed. It has the power to send me sprawling, draining nearly half my vitality reserves in a single blow, making me an easy target for other adversaries that might be lurking nearby.
Even though boars may possess a limited health reserve, their brains are encased in a robust skull due to having a relatively small brain. The most effective method for taking them down is to blast their sides with shotgun fire.
10 Snork
Decomposing Harbingers of Doom
From an objective standpoint, the Snork shouldn’t pose much trouble. These decomposed human remains fall after just a few bullets, and they don’t deliver overly potent attacks.
The way snorks hunt is what finds them truly frightening. Typically, they move around in packs and attack their prey from various angles simultaneously. What’s more, they can leap quite high, making even supposedly secure spots feel precarious for any creature trying to escape.
When threatened, Snorks are capable of kicking, biting, and scratching intruders, but what truly sets them apart is their powerful leap. The Snork can propel itself over two meters into the air to attack. If you don’t manage to strike it mid-air with all your might, it may just get you.
9 Cat
Murder-Parkour Enthusiasts
This cat doesn’t have a particularly soothing demeanor. While they might not be as common as other genetically altered creatures, cats more than compensate with their fierceness.
In simpler terms, the creature known as The Zone’s Cat is an impressively nimble big cat, capable of producing a fearsome growl and possessing extremely pointed nails. It deftly dodges attacks, leaps onto any surface, and inflicts immense harm with each swipe of its claws.
Even though any round can be useful against cats, hitting them isn’t simple. A workaround could involve using buckshot shells or a submachine gun equipped with an extended magazine.
8 Poltergeist
Violent Interior Designers
The danger posed by a poltergeist is inversely proportional to the size of the room you are in.
These unseen beings, possessing psychokinetic abilities, assault by hurling nearby objects at you, reducing your health significantly with each strike – typically decreasing your health bar by one-third or more. Should a poltergeist glide near you, it may retaliate physically, but the mutant generally prefers to maintain its distance.
Although less harmful or hostile compared to others on the list, the poltergeist boasts an extensive health reserve, enabling it to gradually deplete your resources instead.
There are two methods for handling these beings. One option involves a brutal approach: chase it down like Rambo and exhaust all your available firepower.
As a gamer, when I find myself running low on ammo or just not feeling up for a battle, I seize an opportunity to capitalize on a significant vulnerability in this mutant’s sensory abilities.
Since the poltergeist notices movement, sneaking quietly by crouching and moving cautiously might allow you to exit the area without spending unnecessary ammunition and medical supplies.
At times, you may encounter a type of poltergeist with a fiery disposition. Unlike its noisy counterpart, the fire-type is more subdued but extremely aggressive. Instead of creating chaotic noise, it generates fiery abnormalities aimed at you. In a similar vein, in combat, the same rule holds true.
7 Mutated Elk
A Hunter’s Dream
Sometimes, a hunter misses a more traditional game in the Zone, and this hellhole delivers.
From a distance, this elk may appear commonplace, but due to the Zone’s mutations, it sports a shell-like covering over much of its body. In situations like these, ammunition with good armor-penetrating abilities proves particularly useful.
The altered elk possesses a substantial health reserve and uses charging assaults reminiscent of wild boars; however, its piercing scream might momentarily confuse you.
“What sets this mutated elk apart is that it gathers other nearby mutants to join its struggle, rather than competing against them.
Its tactic is to distract you with that blind dog while it lines up a deadly attack, so stay sharp.
6 Burer
The Deadliest Master of Telekinesis
In the game “STALKER 2,” The Burer is considered one of the most ruthless mutants. Similar to how a poltergeist might behave, Burers initially pelt you with objects. However, what sets them apart is their ability to snatch your weapon right out of your grasp.
When the Burer gets hurt, it erects a protective shield, making itself invulnerable to harm for a short period.
If you’re not quick enough to retrieve your thrown weapon, Burers can swiftly redirect it towards you, causing it to explode or shoot at you continuously until they run out of ammo, then physically attack you with the empty grenade.
Bringing a light machine gun or heaven forbid, an RPG into the fray would undeniably result in a fatal outcome.
The secret to killing a Burer is to stay mobile to avoid its distance punch that can hit you behind cover.
Once you’ve activated its defense mechanism using any tool, switch to a robust weapon such as a .308 or 7.62x54R rifle. When the Burer lowers its defenses, empty your magazine in its direction.
5 Bloodsucker
The Invisible Vampire
In a more palatable phrasing, one might say: The creators of STALKER 2 aren’t particularly friendly, but they pale in comparison to the vampire-like creature. You encounter this mutated being right from the start, and it seems to have a knack for appearing at the most inconvenient times.
The bloodsucker has a huge health pool, making light cartridges nigh useless against it.
When it detects its prey, the stealthy predator seamlessly merges with the environment as it swiftly moves towards attack, becoming virtually invisible and extremely difficult to both see and hit.
Predators conceal themselves until the very moment of attack, leaving you with just a few moments to retaliate. A single attack from these creatures can nearly deplete your vitality and cause severe bleeding wounds.
Attempting to trap one may provoke a vampire-like creature to scratch persistently until you retreat or perish. Such encounters seldom result in a favorable outcome for the pursuer.
A powerful strategy for tackling a vampire would be to arm yourself with a potent weapon that has a big ammo capacity and a fast firing speed. When it approaches directly towards you, take advantage of this moment and empty your entire clip as soon as you spot its cloak being dropped.
You will likely get hit at least once, but you will have time to use a medkit in between.
While it might seem unusual, marksmanship rifles such as the EBR and SVD prove highly effective against vampires. Similarly, semi-automatic shotguns like the Saiga D-12 are equally potent in this scenario.
4 Controller
Fighting With Brains
The Controller is a terrifying mutant that uses your mind to defeat you. It normally lurks in abandoned underground installations where you cannot escape its attacks easily.
If the Controller sees you, it can deal massive damage with a ranged psi-bolt that stuns you.
As the Controller gets nearer, its ability to inflict mental harm increases significantly, causing a rapid depletion of your health by means of disturbing illusions.
Furthermore, these kind individuals have the ability to command hordes of reanimated pursuers, summoning an army of the undead to eliminate you.
The initial step after recognizing a Controller is to consume a mind-shield potion. This drink offers protection from psychic assaults, enabling you to confront the Controller with a more balanced stance.
Eliminating them demands unyielding persistence, closing in closely, and unleashing all your might. The Psi-block ability allows you to execute this aggressively, while minimizing significant damage from the Psi-bolt.
Avoid getting too close to the Controller, as its claws can be lethally sharp. Since it moves slowly, you might even outmaneuver a Controller by using explosives like grenades.
3 Psy-Dog
When One Is Too Many
The Psy-dog is the kind of mutant that makes you appreciate the regular dog packs.
These wolves have developed psychic powers as a result of genetic modifications carried out in numerous hidden laboratories within the Zone.
Once it spots its prey, the psy-dog spawns an entire pack of phantoms that deal very real damage.
hidden within the illusions, the genuine anomaly maintains a distance, evading close encounters. Yet, the forcefulness of the spectral assaults often confounds the effort to pinpoint the origin.
If you succeed in dispelling the illusions, the psy-dog will generate fresh ones momentarily. Preempt its action if you wish to survive.
2 Pseudogiant
Because Size Does Matter Here
In the Zone, this oddly shaped being that somewhat resembles a human is seldom seen, and those who stumble upon it rarely survive to share their experience.
The Pseudogiant boasts immense power and an expansive health reserve, posing a significant danger not only to individual stalkers but also to entire groups.
With its extended legs, it can swiftly pursue any prey, while the force of its heavy footsteps creates a shockwave powerful enough to knock you off balance.
In case you find yourself facing a pseudogiant, your best bet would be to flee swiftly and pray that it gets diverted towards another potential target during its pursuit.
In situations where there’s no way out, my advice is to seek the tallest structure nearby, keep track of your ammo, and begin firing. Buckle up, this could be a lengthy battle ahead.
1 Chimera
The Top of the Food Chain
In the Zone, the Chimera stands as its top predator, and fortunately, encountering one is a rarity that one can appreciate.
This creature boasts two heads, doubled essential organs, extraordinary physical strength, and the ability to heal and rejuvenate itself.
A Chimera prefers to track its quarry at a distance, then swiftly pounces when the moment’s right. It has an impressive jumping ability that allows it to land on most surfaces, making it extremely hard to escape from.
When struck, the Chimera temporarily incapacitates stalkers, providing it with an opportunity to adjust its position for subsequent assaults.
In the wild, its robust health reserve gives it a near-invincible quality, while its rapid pace often makes it challenging for others to land an initial attack.
There is only one reliable way to kill a Chimera, and that is to head indoors. Its size prevents it from passing through most doorways (though it can occasionally squeeze through).
Approach a structure, and if possible, shoot at the Chimera from an opening while inside. Keep attacking until it’s defeated. If you run low on bullets, utilize your PDA to write a farewell message to your loved ones, as your journey as a Stalker has likely reached its end.
