As a seasoned gamer who’s weathered countless storms in the gaming world, I must say that the release of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl feels like a triumphant return to form for the genre. Despite its rocky development history, this game has proven itself to be an engaging and immersive experience that’s already captured the hearts of over a million players worldwide.

The journey through the creation process of GSC Game World’s STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been a challenging and bumpy one, yet it seems the effort is proving to be well-spent.

3 days following the highly-anticipated launch, it was disclosed on X (previously known as Twitter) that STALKER 2 has surpassed a million sales. The announcement’s text reads: “This is merely the beginning of our extraordinary journey. The power of Chornobyl resonates more profoundly with every one of us.

Even though it encounters some performance problems, STALKER 2 is an absolute joy to play, brimming with immense potential. Modders are actively working on enhancing the game’s performance and gameplay, yet GSC Game World acknowledges there’s still work to be done.

On the launch day, they acknowledged that the game might have some unpolished parts. Game Studio Creative (GSC) admits that this is their largest project to date. As they gather player responses, GSC guarantees regular updates to the game with immediate fixes. Furthermore, they promise ongoing support for game enhancements and complimentary in-game content. A comprehensive plan will be unveiled in December.

According to SteamDB, approximately 100,000 players are currently enjoying the game at this moment. Its highest number of concurrent players ever recorded is 118,000. The number may increase as we approach the weekend. It’s important to note that these figures do not include the game’s player count within the Xbox ecosystem, as it was released on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass on November 20th.

STALKER Had A Long Journey To Release

In 2010, a year following the launch of STALKER in 2009, GSC Game World, the developer, experienced layoffs which reduced their workforce by up to 75%. Consequently, the game development was paused as they shifted their focus to other projects. The project remained on hold until 2021 when a gameplay trailer was unveiled during the Microsoft/Bethesda E3 presentation.

On April 28th, 2022, a release date was disclosed, however, the Russian invasion of Ukraine created complications for the development process since GSC is headquartered in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. As a result of the war, the team relocated their work to Prague, Czech Republic. The game’s subtitle underwent a change from its original spelling, “Heart of Chernobyl,” to “Heart of Chornobyl” in the native Ukrainian language as opposed to the Russian one.

Despite the challenging development process of STALKER 2, which has been far from smooth sailing, it’s understandable that some of its rough aspects can be overlooked given the circumstances. What makes this even more impressive is that the developers at GSC not only had to flee their professional studio but also their personal homes due to war. Despite these incredibly difficult conditions, they have managed to create a game that resonates deeply with fans, showcasing their resilience and dedication.
