STALKER 2: The Lore of Scar and The Clear Sky Faction Explained

As a die-hard Stalker fan with years of experience navigating the treacherous lands of the Zone, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when delving into the lore of Scar and the Clear Sky faction. These characters were integral to the rich tapestry of stories that unfolded within the world of Stalker, and their tales continue to captivate me even now.

Prior to the release of “STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl”, the STALKER series had been active for only three years, from 2007 to 2009. Within this short span, a total of three different STALKER games were launched. The first game, “STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl”, marked the initial exploration into the Zone. “STALKER: Clear Sky” served as a prequel, while “STALKER: Call of Pripyat” was a sequel that followed directly on from the events of the first game, occurring only weeks later.

In addition to its extensive primary plot, each STALKER installment offered intricate details that expanded the history of the Zone and its residents. Though it takes place much later, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl continues many of these lore elements and even reintroduces a few original characters, both protagonists and antagonists. Before diving into the main storyline of STALKER 2, players should familiarize themselves with who Scar is and what the Clear Sky faction was.

The Lore of STALKER’s Scar and Clear Sky Faction Explained

The Formation of Clear Sky

Immediately after the Chornobyl Accident in 1986, a clandestine group of Soviet scientists established several laboratories discreetly within the perimeter of the destroyed nuclear power plant. Over the ensuing two decades, these researchers conducted experiments on the Noosphere, a subtle energy field believed to encircle the Earth and impact human thought and emotions.

In 2006, experiments involving the Noosphere led to a catastrophe similar to the Chernobyl disaster, creating a divide between the Noosphere and the Biosphere. This split resulted in strange, physics-bending phenomena emerging across the affected area, which we now refer to as “the Zone”. The scientists responsible for this rift found themselves at odds over how to proceed. One faction advocated for researching the divide and potentially utilizing its power, while another proposed attempting to seal or manage it.

After departing from the Chornobyl testing site, they journeyed into the vast wetlands known as the Great Swamps. There, this makeshift group established themselves as the Clear Sky faction, with a mission to investigate and understand the Zone’s mysterious Anomalies and discover a means to halt the hazardous Emissions leaking from the fissure.

Clear Sky’s Recruitment of The Mercenary Scar

At a later point, a mercenary known as Scar was recruited to guide a team of Ecologists through the vast Great Swamps. During their journey, an enormous Pollution cloud swept across the area, claiming the lives of the Ecologists and leaving Scar unconscious. Nimble, a soldier from Clear Sky, found and revived Scar, then brought him back to the Clear Sky stronghold. Upon reaching there, Scar encountered Lebedev, the leader of Clear Sky.

As a fan, I’d rephrase it like this: “Scar, Lebedev shares some fascinating news about my body after the Emission. It momentarily boosted me, but another dose could be lethal instantly. Now, Lebedev tasks me with a mission – to drive out the Renegades who have been encroaching on the Great Swamps since the Emission.

Scar’s Hunt for Strelok

In the role of an ardent fan, let me rephrase it: Following my successful purge of the Great Swamps from Renegades for Clear Sky, I’m informed that the Emissions might be due to a band of explorers known as Stalkers, who apparently managed to penetrate the heart of the Forbidden Zone. My mission now is to track down these elusive Stalkers, and I soon discover they are under the command of an enigmatic figure named Strelok.

In the initial STALKER game, Strelok serves as the playable lead character. The climax of STALKer: Clear Sky seamlessly transitions into Shadow of Chernobyl.

Scar hunts Strelok across the Zone, eventually encountering him in the Red Forest. Strelok manages to escape, however, and Scar continues to hunt him to the center of the Zone. After capturing Limansk with the rest of Clear Sky, Scar gains access to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, where he finally manages to confront and incapacitate Strelok.

As I stand over my opponent, another energy surge erupts from the power plant. Meanwhile, Strelok is taken captive by the Monolith faction, leaving me to meet an unfortunate end from the blast. The majority of Clear Sky’s forces either perish or are forced to switch allegiances and join Monolith.
