Star Citizen Hits 13 Years of Development & Nearly $900 Million In Funding, And It’s Still In Alpha

Star Citizen, announced 13 years ago, is still under development. While it remains in the alpha stage, the game has impressively raised nearly $900 million through crowdfunding.

Despite the criticisms, Star Citizen genuinely appears to be a high-quality game. Considering the extensive development time – comparable to multiple game franchises – and the massive funding it’s received (enough for several major movies), that’s almost to be expected. Ultimately, Star Citizen has the potential to be a truly remarkable and groundbreaking game.

Star Citizen Approaching $1 Billion In Funding

Star Citizen has been in playable form since 2017. It shares some similarities with Escape From Tarkov, which first became playable in 2016 and officially launched in 2025. However, unlike Tarkov, there are currently no plans for a definitive “1.0” release for Star Citizen; the developers are still focused on improving the game and adding more features.

As a long-time fan, I’m starting to feel like there’s a real difference between a work-in-progress and a finished game now. Honestly, at some point, a game has to come out, and eight years of alpha testing just feels… a little too long, you know?

As of October 2025, Star Citizen, which was first announced in 2012, has raised over $885 million through crowdfunding.

Star Citizen is estimated to be one of the three most costly video games ever developed. While exact figures differ, what’s clear is that funding continues to pour in. It’s likely the game will surpass $900 million soon, and could even reach $1 billion unless a beta or official release date is announced.

To be clear, we’re not saying anything negative about the game itself or how it’s being made. However, the situation is strange, especially since the team responsible for the server technology left the company a few months ago. It makes you question whether these ongoing issues will ever be resolved.
