Though Takaya Imamura left Nintendo in 2021, his impact on the company is still clear. Over his thirty years as a designer there, he helped create some of gaming’s most famous characters, like Captain Falcon, the unique Tingle, and the well-known Fox McCloud.
After the unexpected reveal of a Star Fox remake – a fresh take on the beloved Star Fox 64 – producer Yusuke Imamura shared his reaction online. Like many fans around the world, he admitted the new game is a strong reason to buy a Nintendo Switch 2. However, his excitement was tinged with a little sadness.
A Matter of Supervision and Art Direction

Imamura first expressed genuine enthusiasm on his X (formerly Twitter) account about the return of the Star Fox series. He posted, “Star Fox is finally going to be revived…” and followed it up with a hopeful, “This isn’t a dream, right?”
Things started to get tricky, though, when they began discussing the new character designs for the game.
When fans asked Imamura about the redesigned characters from Fox and the gang, he playfully said, “That’s what happens when I’m not in charge!” He clarified that while he still likes the general idea, he prefers his original designs.
Imamura didn’t hold back with his opinions, even comparing the game to the recent Super Mario Bros. Movie on X. He felt the character designs by Illumination in the movie were actually better than those in the upcoming remake. He specifically praised Fox’s facial expression when he first meets Mario, saying it perfectly captured a hostile look and was the best design choice in that scene.
When fans shared their thoughts on the updated appearance of Fox and the team, Imamura playfully responded, “That’s what I get for not keeping an eye on things!”
The game’s art style has been controversial since it was first shown, and fans are sharply divided. Now, with the original character designer publicly sharing their honest – and somewhat critical – opinion, the debate is likely to intensify.

Okay, so the new stuff is definitely… different, and people have opinions! But it’s so cool to see that even after stepping away from directly working on the game, Imamura clearly still cares deeply about the Great Fox crew and how everything looks. He’s even hinted he’d be ready to fly again when it finally comes out! And get this – it’s a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, landing on June 25th. I can’t wait!
