As a long-time Trekkie and avid fan of Colm Meaney’s exceptional portrayal of Miles O’Brien, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia at the possibility of seeing him return to the Star Trek universe. With his seven years in space suits for TNG behind him, it seems that he may not be as eager to don the uniform once more, but who knows? Perhaps a well-crafted script could entice even the most reluctant of stars back into orbit.
A Star Trek actor recently clarified some speculations about a possible comeback of his character within the franchise. Although he hasn’t entirely ruled out the possibility of returning to Star Trek, it’s not his primary aim to reprise his role in the widely-loved sci-fi action series at this time.
The Star Trek universe has flourished since its inception in 1966, starting with Star Trek: The Original Series. It has led to numerous movies and spin-offs, and many renowned personalities have graced the franchise over the decades. Notable figures such as Whoopi Goldberg, Jean Simmons, Kurtwood Smith, and even Stephen Hawking have made appearances as special guest stars on Star Trek. Additionally, several celebrities who later became household names in Hollywood began their careers within the franchise, like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Joan Collins, Ashley Judd, Seth MacFarlane, Kirsten Dunst, and Terry O’Quinn. Among these stars, some rose to fame by portraying beloved characters within the franchise. One of these actors has recently expressed his thoughts on a potential return.
Actor Colm Meaney recently discussed his role in the latest thriller action film “Duchess,” alongside Charlotte Kirk, with ComicBookMovie.com. In this interview, he was questioned about the possibility of reprising his beloved character, Miles O’Brien, a well-known Starfleet non-commissioned officer who served onboard the USS Enterprise-D following the Federation-Cardassian War and later held the position of chief of operations at starbase Deep Space 9. Meaney played O’Brien in two series – “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987 – 1994) and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993 – 1999). When asked if he would consider revisiting his Star Trek character, especially following the return to the era of “The Next Generation” in “Picard,” Meaney stated, “I think seven years in a space suit was enough, you know?” referencing his seven-year stint on “TNG.” This comment came as fans expressed disappointment that O’Brien did not appear in the “Picard” series.
Regarding a possible comeback on the show, Meaney expressed that while he’s open to the idea, he doubts his suitability to play O’Brien anymore due to age. He jokingly added, “Is an older Miles O’Brien something fans would want to see? I’m not sure about that.” Despite this, he maintains a keen interest in reprising his Star Trek character, but it’s not currently one of his top priorities.
There’s no question that fans eagerly anticipate Michael Dorn reprising his role as O’Brien for various reasons, such as nostalgia, emotional attachment, maintaining continuity of the storyline, and witnessing the character’s development. Star Trek has held a special place in many lives, and bringing back familiar faces evokes cherished memories. O’Brien is among the beloved characters within the franchise, so fans are invested in him and would be thrilled to see more of his story unfold, including his growth, transformations, and advancements. Moreover, given that the franchise is returning to The Next Generation era, it seems fitting to have O’Brien reappear as well. Additionally, having Dorn back helps maintain O’Brien’s narrative thread while honoring the series’ legacy where he was previously featured. Seeing veteran Star Trek actors return to the franchise gives the universe a sense of continuity and enriches the ongoing storyline.
Fans of Star Trek would undoubtedly give a warm reception to ex-Star Trek actors like Meany. Their enthusiasm was clear in their support for Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek: Picard, which spanned three seasons from 2020 to 2023. Stewart first appeared in The Next Generation, just like Meany. Stewart and his fellow Picard cast members are eager to reprise their roles in Star Trek: Legacy. Fans have been eagerly awaiting Paramount Plus to approve Legacy, a proposed spinoff of Picard. If approved, it’s hoped that Meany will join the series.
Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard stream on Paramount Plus.
