Key Takeaways

  • Fans fell in love with Anson Mount’s portrayal of Captain Pike in Star Trek: Discovery .
  • Mount originally auditioned for a darker character in the Star Trek universe.
  • Mount’s “Boy Scout” energy suited Captain Pike, making him perfect for the role.

As a lifelong Trekkie with countless hours spent in the final frontier, I can confidently say that Anson Mount’s portrayal of Captain Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is nothing short of extraordinary. His Boy Scout energy perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this beloved character, making him a perfect fit for the role.

Fans of Star Trek are familiar with Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He plays the character so convincingly that it seems impossible to envision another actor embodying Pike, or Mount portraying any other character within the Star Trek universe besides Pike. However, this was almost the case!

As a devoted Star Trek fan, I was thrilled when Captain Christopher Pike, the captain who sailed the original Enterprise prior to Captain James T. Kirk, made his debut in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. The charismatic performance of Anson Mount as Pike and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, Una Chin-Riley, captured the hearts of fans everywhere. After the conclusion of Discovery’s second season, there was a groundswell of support for a spinoff focusing on Pike’s crew. The excitement only grew when Mount and Romijn reprised their roles in an episode of Short Treks.

Before I embarked on my voyage to the Captain’s seat of the U.S.S. Enterprise, I had already given it a try for the U.S.S. Discovery’s Captain’s chair. In a recent post on Bluesky, I shared a snippet from my audition video, not for the role of Captain Pike, but for the role of Captain Gabriel Lorca.

Mount Bringing Lorca to Life

The one-minute video features a brief encounter between Lorca and Michael Burnham, marking their initial meeting. In this scene, Jason Isaacs, with his characteristic charm, brings the same appeal to his portrayal of Lorca as he does to Captain Pike in every episode. This clip effortlessly invites us to envision Isaacs as a smooth, captivating version of Lorca, who made his first impression on the crew of Discovery.

It’s common knowledge among fans that the Lorca they encountered wasn’t his true self. Instead, it was Mirror Universe Lorca disguising himself as Prime Universe Lorca. His charismatic persona was merely a mask for his true character – a cold-blooded and sly killer. However, envisioning Pike portraying such a villain is quite challenging. This isn’t due to his lack of ability, as he certainly has it, but because he excels so well in the role of the honest and virtuous “Boy Scout” Captain Pike.

When Not Getting the Role is a Good Thing

According to Mount’s post, he grasped why the creative team opted for Jason Isaacs for the role rather than himself. Fans concurred in their comments, pointing out that Isaacs was indeed ideal for Lorca, yet Mount was a superior choice for Pike.

By the time Isaacs auditioned for Lorca, he had extensive experience playing the villain. He’d brought Lucius Malfoy to life in the Harry Potter movies, portrayed the brutal British soldier Colonel William Tavington in The Patriot, and played the iconic villain Roman Castevet in a miniseries remake of Rosemary’s Baby. The hard edge these roles gave him made his turn from trusted commander to conniving villain in the second season of Discovery an even sharper betrayal. And once he was bad, he was deliciously bad, like Isaacs’ previous villains.

In another scenario, Mount’s skills might have been sufficient for the role, but he likely wouldn’t have delivered the same menacing intensity as Isaacs. Instead, Mount exudes elegance rather than villainy, which is the characteristic that propelled Captain Pike from a recurring guest spot to his own series spinoff.

If another actor had portrayed Captain Pike instead, it’s possible that Star Trek fans may not have grown as deeply attached to the character. They might not have demanded a spinoff series centered around Pike and his crew. In that case, Star Trek enthusiasts would arguably be watching the truest adaptation of Star Trek among all the modern shows in the franchise today.

So, honestly, it’s a really good thing Mount didn’t nail that first audition.
