As a lifelong Star Trek fan and someone who has followed the adventures of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock since I was a young boy, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The slow-burn exploration of their friendship is something I’ve always wanted to see more of, and it seems like we’re finally going to get that in Season 3.

A performer from “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” recently disclosed some fresh insights regarding the upcoming third season. As per his statements, the third season will explore the bond of friendship between Captain James T. Kirk and the mixed-race character Spock, who is half-human and half-Vulcan.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a series that originates from Star Trek: Discovery, and serves as a precursor to Star Trek: The Original Series. This show focuses on Captain Christopher Pike and his crew aboard the starship Enterprise, as they embark on new adventures and missions throughout the galaxy prior to the events of TOS. Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn portray Pike, Spock, and Number One respectively, all characters from the original series. Additionally, several familiar faces appear in guest roles, such as Eugene Cordero (Sam Rutherford), Tawny Newsome (Beckett Mariner), Jerry O’Connell (Jack Ransom), Jack Quaid (Brad Boimler), Noel Wells (D’Vana Tendi), and Paul Wesley (James T. Kirk). One of these actors recently provided insights on what viewers can anticipate in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3.

Wesley appeared at STLV: Trek to Vegas to discuss his career, including The Vampire Diaries and his take on the iconic role of Captain Kirk in Strange New Worlds. While speaking at the event, Wesley tried to avoid spoilers as he answered fans’ questions, Screen Rant reported. He teased that “amazing stuff” was coming. He also spoke about Kirk’s blossoming friendship with Spock, which would be featured in the new season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He said, “We have some amazing stuff in season 3. Yeah, it’s a slow burn. You don’t wanna, out of the gate, explore everything. It’s nice to have the characters slowly get to know one another, because that friendship is so important to this series. It’s really nice to [give] sprinkles and hints of what’s to come.”

In the upcoming season of “Strange New Worlds”, Wesley shares some insights about Kirk and Spock’s strong relationship, which he describes as deeply intertwined despite their contrasting natures. According to him, they are like yin and yang, balancing each other out effectively. The development of their friendship will be shown gradually throughout the season. Wesley explains, “There will be hints at the depth of their connection, given how opposite they seem. Essentially, Kirk and Spock embody yin and yang in a positive manner. However, we delve deeper into this dynamic… The short response is affirmative. We indeed explore their relationship extensively in season 3. Yet, I think we deliberately allow it to unfold gradually.”

In the Star Trek series, the bond between Kirk and Spock is intriguing to delve into, as their friendship is profoundly portrayed. There have been suggestions that their relationship might extend beyond friendship, even hinting at a romantic aspect. However, David Gerrold, a writer for The Original Series, has dismissed this idea, often referred to as the “slash” theory. In an interview with Tim Farley and Randall Landers, Gerrold clarified that Kirk and Spock are not lovers or boyfriends but rather close friends. Their friendship is clearly depicted in Star Trek: TOS. For example, in Season 2, Episode 1, titled “Amok Time,” when Kirk observed Spock acting strangely due to the influence of ‘pon farr,’ an intense hormonal imbalance that Vulcans experience every seven years, which can lead to insanity or even death if not addressed through sexual intercourse, Kirk disobeyed orders and directed the Enterprise towards Vulcan to assist his friend. This action demonstrated that he prioritized their friendship over duty.

In the Star Trek series, the bond between Kirk and Spock was unbreakable – they trusted each other implicitly and were prepared to lay down their lives for one another. For example, when the Genesis Device endangered their ship in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Spock willingly gave up his life for Kirk, and Kirk defied Starfleet commands to provide solace to his friend’s spirit. To honor Spock’s memory, Kirk and his crew stole the decommissioned USS Enterprise to transport his body back to his home planet. The friendship between Kirk and Spock is one of the most enduring relationships in Star Trek, and exploring their connection will always be a delight for fans.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 will stream on Paramount Plus in 2025.
