Highlights

  • Constable Odo from Deep Space 9 is a standout security officer with shape-shifting abilities and a passion for justice.
  • Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh from Strange New Worlds impresses with her keen instincts and dedication to her job.
  • Lt. Commander Tuvok from Voyager embodies coolness under pressure and earned his promotion through excellent service.

As a huge fan of Star Trek and its diverse cast of characters, I’ve had the pleasure of observing and admiring some truly exceptional security officers throughout the franchise. Among them, two individuals stand out to me for their unique experiences and unwavering dedication: Tuvok from Voyager and Worf from The Next Generation.

Among the numerous candidates vying for the title of “Best Starfleet Security Officer” in Star Trek, it would be prudent to present some prominent options for fans to make their own informed choices. Throughout the series, viewers have been treated to a number of exceptional security officers. However, The Original Series tended to overlook this role, often having them either standing inconspicuously behind Captain Kirk or meeting untimely demises off-camera.

In the fascinating mirror universe of “Star Trek,” Hikaru Sulu, played by George Takei, held the significant position of chief security officer on the ISS Enterprise during season 2, episode 10, titled “Mirror, Mirror.” Meanwhile, Pavel Chekov, portrayed by Walter Koenig, assumed this role in “The Motion Picture.” The rest of the crew members advanced through their ranks with minimal recognition or even an unacknowledged presence.

Fortunately, the role of security personnel has developed along with the franchise, providing numerous opportunities for intriguing characters to make their mark. These characters have become fan favorites and are now essential elements in any Star Trek series or film. Here’s a look at some notable security officers:

Constable Odo

Deep Space 9

Star Trek: Who's The Best Starfleet Security Officer?

In any discussion about the top Starfleet security officers on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” Constable Odo, played by René Auberjonois, is a must-mention. Initially introduced as one of the station’s few survivors following its transformation from Terok Nor, Odo clashes with Commander Sisko over managing the facility. Having grown accustomed to enforcing the law personally under Gul Dukat’s rule, he finds it challenging to adapt to a new system.

In the fourth episode of season 1, “A Man Alone,” Sisko takes Odo (Colm Meaney) by surprise by questioning his power to arrest a suspect without prior cause. Despite the passage of time and forming attachments, Odo’s tenacity for maintaining order on Deep Space Nine remains unchanged. This often leads him to Quark’s Bar, where he closely monitors the suspicious dealings of the cunning Ferengi, Armin Shimerman’s character. With his unique ability to transform into any shape or form as a Changeling, Odo’s exceptional skills in law enforcement are no surprise. Hence, the dedicated and principled “Constable ‘Justice is justice’ Odo” continues to ensure DS9’s safety.

Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh

Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Who's The Best Starfleet Security Officer?

In the premiere of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) has emerged as a strong candidate for “Best Starfleet Security Officer.” When the Enterprise, led by Captain Pike (Anson Mount), entered Kiley 279’s airspace, they began picking up odd signals. La’an suggested raising the shields to protect them. Spock, the science officer, cautioned against defensive measures, fearing an unnecessary confrontation. However, La’an’s intuition was on target. Acting swiftly, she shielded the ship just in time for the plasma torpedoes that followed moments later.

Fans of “Star Trek” have been impressed by La’an’s ability to identify danger and handle tough situations since the beginning. Her dedication to her job plays a role, but so does her past traumatic experiences before Starfleet. In episode 3 of season 2, titled “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow,” we observe her training with Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) to release built-up energy. La’an may not be the most affectionate or approachable individual. However, viewers have enjoyed witnessing her evolution into a valued crew member and exceptional officer.

Lt. Commander Tuvok

Voyager

Star Trek: Who's The Best Starfleet Security Officer?

In the world of Star Trek, if you’re searching for Starfleet’s most collected and composed officer, I would recommend looking at Lt. Commander Tuvok from Voyager, played by Tim Russ. Contrary to popular belief among Vulcans, his unflappable nature isn’t solely due to his genetic makeup. An intriguing episode in the fifth season, titled “Gravity” (episode 13), sheds light on an instance where Tuvok was susceptible to the intense emotions of the Shon-ha’lock. This revelation underscores that even for a Vulcan as disciplined as Tuvok, external guidance and learning from a master like Joseph Ruskin were necessary to maintain balance during times of emotional turmoil.

In the course of time, the skills he acquired for handling his emotions proved invaluable as Tuvok dealt with numerous complex situations aboard the USS Voyager. One heartwarming instance between Tuvok and Neelix (Ethan Phillips) in season 3, episode 19, titled “Rise,” showcased his strength as a security chief. In contrast to Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang), Voyager recognized Tuvok’s exceptional performance and swiftly advanced him in rank. Eventually, Picard witnessed his promotion to captain, an uncommon achievement for a Vulcan Starfleet officer but merited based on his outstanding abilities.

Lt. Worf

The Next Generation

Star Trek: Who's The Best Starfleet Security Officer?

As a dedicated gamer and avid Star Trek: The Next Generation fan, I’ve always been intrigued by Lt. Worf, played by Michael Dorn. This enigmatic Klingon character has some quirks that have followed him throughout the series. One of his earliest introductions to peculiar tastes came from Guinan, portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg, in season 3, episode 15, titled “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” She introduced him to prune juice, and ever since then, I couldn’t believe how much he became obsessed with it!

Some fans of “Star Trek” have raised questions about Worf’s authenticity as a Klingon due to his distinctive preferences. However, these doubts are quickly dispelled when we focus on Worf’s exceptional traits as a Starfleet officer. His transfer to “Deep Space Nine” led him to collaborate with everyone’s beloved grouch. During the Dominion War and encounters with intoxicated Klingons, Worf proved himself to be an invaluable partner. Indeed, anyone capable of gaining Odo’s admiration must be accomplishing something noteworthy.

Who Is the Best?

Star Trek: Who's The Best Starfleet Security Officer?

Choosing the most exceptional Starfleet security officer from Star Trek is no simple task, as numerous characters have made indelible marks on the franchise. Worf held Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) in high esteem before her contentious demise in The Next Generation. While Barzan Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) didn’t appear consistently on Discovery, she proved herself to be as capable as any of her security officer counterparts.

Lt. Malcolm Reed’s (Dominic Keating) skill in helping the mostly human crew of the Enterprise escape dangerous situations significantly contributed to their survival. In the animated series “Lower Decks,” Bajoran Lt. Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore) and Tamarian Lt. J.G. Kayshon (Carl Tart) demonstrated exceptional value. However, it’s challenging to single out one Starfleet security officer as the best. Pondering over this choice makes us reflect on the unique qualities that make these Star Trek characters remarkable. Perhaps that was the intention all along.
