Star Wars Eclipse Gets Disappointing Update

Highlights

  • Lead writer leaves Star Wars Eclipse for own studio, leaving Quantic Dream to push forward without him.
  • Little information on Star Wars Eclipse has been released these past few years.
  • Uncertainty surrounds the impact of the writer’s departure on the game’s release date and narrative direction.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit that the news of Adam Williams leaving Star Wars Eclipse has left me somewhat apprehensive. Having closely followed Quantic Dream’s narrative-driven games since Heavy Rain, I can’t help but feel a pang of concern about the future direction of this highly anticipated title.

It seems that the upcoming Star Wars project, known as ‘Star Wars Eclipse’, has lost its main writer, Adam Williams, who plans to establish a new game development studio on his own. Although Quantic Dream hasn’t shared much information about ‘Star Wars Eclipse’ since its initial announcement, they will now have to continue developing the game without the involvement of their long-term lead writer, Adam Williams.

At The Game Awards 2021, the highly anticipated game titled Star Wars Eclipse was unveiled, sparking excitement among fans of the science fiction series. This upcoming title is set in the High Republic Era, which precedes the events of the original movie trilogy by a few hundred years. Despite being set in a different time period, the teaser trailer showcased familiar Star Wars elements such as lightsabers, space combat, and even a protocol droid.

For over two years and a half since the initial announcement, there hasn’t been much official news disclosed. Lately, the lead writer, Williams, announced on LinkedIn that he is departing from Quantic Dream, where he had worked for almost a decade, to establish his own game development studio. Besides working on the upcoming Star Wars project, Williams’ exceptional writing skills in games like the 2018 interactive adventure game Detroit: Become Human have been widely recognized. Although he expressed appreciation towards Quantic Dream and LucasFilm, Williams hinted that his new studio is already working on a secretive project which he described as “extremely innovative, exceptionally unique, but for now, it remains a secret.”

Star Wars Eclipse Loses its Lead Writer

It remains uncertain how Williams’ departure will affect the progress of Star Wars Eclipse, given that changes in leadership during the development process can often slow things down. Back in December 2021, industry insider Tom Henderson suggested that the game could have been in development for as long as 18 months before its announcement, and some speculate that it may not be released until 2027. However, more recent conjecture has pushed that potential launch date up to 2025. With no official updates from LucasFilm or Quantic Dream, fans are eagerly awaiting news about the game’s release.

Quantic Dream’s official site and social networks haven’t acknowledged Williams’ departure yet. Similar to many titles in their collection, the upcoming Star Wars game seems to prioritize narrative elements significantly. With multiple storylines that branch off, it should be noted that any main cast member in Star Wars Eclipse can meet an untimely end, and the plot will still progress without them – a fact that might prove challenging for the new lead writer who takes over Williams’ vacated position.
