Many fans were thrilled to hear about a new Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic game, set in a popular period of the Star Wars universe. However, journalist Jason Schreier reported that the game is unlikely to be released in the near future. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is intended to capture the spirit of the original Knights of the Old Republic, a highly-regarded game developed by BioWare and first released in 2003.
Although details are still limited, the developers have revealed some key aims for the new game, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. It will be a single-player action RPG focused on story, where your choices have a real impact. Like other Star Wars games that let you make meaningful decisions, you’ll be able to determine your character’s journey. It’s still early days, but by calling it a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic, the team suggests they’re aiming high.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Is Likely Several Years Away
Last night’s biggest surprise was Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, led by Casey Hudson, who directed KOTOR (and Anthem). Exciting news for lots of people… but Lucasfilm says the studio was founded this year, which means that 2030 is an *optimistic* guess. Maybe it’ll be a PlayStation 7 game — Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier.bsky.social) December 12, 2025 at 11:30 AM
Journalist Jason Schreier called the announcement of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic the biggest surprise from The Game Awards. The game is being led by Casey Hudson, known for directing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, the Mass Effect series, and Anthem. Schreier also pointed out that the developing studio, Arcanaut Studios, was only founded in 2025, meaning the game has been in development for less than a year. Based on that, he estimates a release date of 2030 at the earliest, jokingly suggesting it might even come out on the PlayStation 7.
Many gamers reacted with disappointment to the announcement, hoping the game was closer to being finished. One commenter called announcements without gameplay footage or a release date “not really news.” Journalist Jason Schreier agreed, adding that projects are often canceled after such early reveals. He cited Monolith’s canceled Wonder Woman game, announced similarly at The Game Awards in 2021, as an example. While nothing is certain, players are still hoping this game will eventually be released, even if it takes a long time.
Even though it will likely be a while before fans can play Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, several other Star Wars games are on the horizon. Star Wars: Galactic Racer was recently announced and is expected to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It’s been a long time since a dedicated Star Wars racing game was released – the last one, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, came out 23 years ago in 2002. Many are also excited about Star Wars: Zero Company, a turn-based tactics game set during the Clone Wars, which is also aiming for a 2026 release. With multiple Star Wars games currently in development, fans are hopeful for the future of this beloved franchise.
