When Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 and closed LucasArts, many Star Wars games and books were either put on hold or completely cancelled, falling into what’s now known as Legends.
After Disney acquired the Star Wars franchise, many projects were put on hold, but Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and its related games were particularly affected. The only title to receive continued updates since then has been the online game, Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Since 2012, there hasn’t been much talk about the Old Republic era in the Star Wars universe, except for the announcement of a KOTOR remake in 2021. Development of that remake has moved from Aspyr to Saber Interactive, and it still doesn’t have a confirmed release date.
Fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic have a reason to be excited! The Game Awards 2025 just announced a brand-new game in the series: Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Explained
Though not a direct follow-up to previous Old Republic games, Fate of the Old Republic, created by Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games, is a fresh story that will still honor the spirit of the original KOTOR games, according to Lucasfilm Games’ Douglas Reilly.
Little of the Old Republic era has been discussed since 2012 […]
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m already hyped for Fate of the Old Republic! It’s clearly going to be connected to the original KOTOR game. They even showed a wrecked Interdictor ship – the same kind Darth Malak used – in the trailer! Plus, Casey Hudson, who directed KOTOR, is coming back to lead development, which is awesome news. It feels like they really understand what made KOTOR special and are building on that legacy.
In a recent interview with Kristin Baver, the editor-in-chief of StarWars.com, actor Miles Hudson explained that Fate of the Old Republic aims to deliver a fresh and compelling Star Wars story.

Similar to KOTOR, Fate will be a story-focused, single-player role-playing game with a diverse set of new characters, including a new Jedi featured in the game’s first trailer.
The game Fate is still being developed, and there’s no confirmed release date yet. However, the creator, Reilly, has promised fans that the game has “literally infinite stories” to explore.
