For over four decades, Star Wars video games have been popular on almost every console, letting millions of players experience the galaxy far, far away through many different types of games and storylines.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I know there are so many games out there – over 100, actually! They range from those classic, pixelated games like Super Star Wars to really immersive, modern adventures like Star Wars Outlaws. Honestly, with that many options, it can be tough to know where to even start if you’re new to Star Wars gaming!
Every gamer should experience these 10 Star Wars games. They’re important to the Star Wars universe, offer incredibly fun gameplay, feature captivating stories, and have significantly influenced video games as a whole.
10. Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Star Wars’ First Major Multimedia Project
These days, when a new Star Wars movie, show, or game comes out, it’s usually accompanied by things like novels, comics, and action figures. But the very first big project to do that was Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, which came out in 1996 for the Nintendo 64 and PC.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I always loved Shadows of the Empire! It’s an action game – think shooting and jumping – that takes place right after The Empire Strikes Back. You play as Dash Rendar, a smuggler who teams up with the Rebels to stay one step ahead of the Empire. The main story follows his efforts to protect Luke and Leia from a really dangerous crime boss named Prince Xizor, who’s part of this huge criminal organization called Black Sun. It’s a thrilling ride!
Released on the N64, Shadows of the Empire wasn’t just a great game – its story, told across a novel, comic, and the game itself, created a strong foundation for Lucasfilm and LucasArts to build larger, more detailed stories within the Star Wars universe. The Black Sun criminal organization introduced in Shadows of the Empire continues to appear in newer Star Wars stories today.
9. Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader
A Perfect Starfighter Simulator
Given the frequent and exciting starfighter battles in Star Wars, it’s no surprise that many video games have tried to recreate that experience. Most fans agree that Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader on the GameCube did it best.
Unlike the original Nintendo 64 game, Rogue Leader lets players experience iconic space battles from the first three Star Wars films, as well as some new battles. You can play as Luke Skywalker, Wedge Antilles, and the rest of Rogue Squadron, choosing between a third-person perspective or a more realistic first-person view from inside the starfighters.
In Rogue Leader, players aren’t limited to standard Rebel ships like the A-wing, B-wing, X-wing, and Y-wing. The game also allows you to fly iconic vehicles from throughout the Star Wars universe, such as the Millennium Falcon, Slave I, a T-16 Skyhopper, a Snowspeeder, various TIE fighters, a Lambda-class shuttle, and a Naboo N-1 starfighter.
8. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
The Best Lightsaber Combat in All of Gaming
As a Star Wars gamer, one of my favorite characters has always been Kyle Katarn – he went from being a Stormtrooper to a Rebel spy and eventually a Jedi! I’ve played through all his games, the Dark Forces and Jedi Knight series, and honestly, I think Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy has the best lightsaber fighting I’ve ever experienced in any game. It just feels so good!
Set a decade after Return of the Jedi, Jedi Academy centers on Jaden Korr, a young Jedi student, and their training at Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy on the planet Yavin IV. Guided by Kyle Katarn, Jaden rapidly becomes skilled with a lightsaber and begins battling the remaining forces of the old Empire.
While you can still use blasters in first-person, Jedi Academy is famous for its lightsaber battles viewed from a third-person perspective. Players can pick a fighting style and choose to wield one lightsaber, a double-bladed saber, or even two lightsabers at once, letting them slice through enemies in exciting ways.
7. Star Wars: The Old Republic
BioWare’s Ambitious Star Wars MMO
There are several good Star Wars MMOs available, like Star Wars Galaxies. However, I think Star Wars: The Old Republic, created by BioWare, is particularly enjoyable for newer fans. It’s still being updated with new content almost 15 years after it first came out.
Set around 3,600 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Republic depicts a galactic war. The story centers on a conflict between the Republic, a powerful military force, and the newly returned Sith Empire. Jedi Knights battle countless Sith Warriors as the galaxy is plunged into chaos.
This online role-playing game lets you create a unique character and team up with players from around the world. You can experience exciting stories and challenging adventures, choosing to play as a Jedi, a member of the Republic military, a cunning Smuggler, a powerful Sith, or a specialized operative like a Bounty Hunter.
6. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
The Story of Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice
Before Disney acquired the rights to Star Wars, LucasArts created one of the most highly-regarded Star Wars games of all time: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It was a single-player, third-person action game where players engaged in fast-paced combat.
The game Force Unleashed takes place between Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope. Players take on the role of Starkiller, Darth Vader’s hidden apprentice, who is sent on a mission to destroy the remaining Jedi, rebel groups, and anyone in the Empire who learns about his existence.
Okay, so Force Unleashed isn’t officially part of the Star Wars story anymore, but honestly, it’s still a blast to play. And if you get the DLC, it’s even better! You get to replay A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back as Starkiller, but they’re way darker and more intense versions of those movies. It’s seriously a cool experience.
5. Star Wars: Republic Commando
Clone Troopers’ Forgotten Stories
Before the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and Karen Traviss’ novels explored the individual thoughts and feelings of Clone Troopers, the 2005 video game Star Wars: Republic Commando was the first Star Wars story to center completely around the lives of the Clones.
Players took on the role of RC-1138 “Boss,” the leader of Clone Commando Squad Delta, along with his teammates Fixer, Scorch, and Sev. Together, they carried out dangerous missions during the Clone Wars, from the Battle of Geonosis to the Battle of Kashyyyk, battling against Battle Droids, Geonosians, and Trandoshan slavers.
Republic Commando stands out as a unique Star Wars game, unlike anything that came before or after. Although a sequel, Imperial Commando, was never made, the game’s impact is still felt in Star Wars today, with commando units appearing in shows like The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
4. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Disney’s Greatest Star Wars Game Yet
Since Disney acquired Star Wars in 2012, their release of new games has been somewhat inconsistent. However, one game that everyone—both fans and critics—has loved is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which plays similarly to the challenging ‘Souls’ games.
Similar to Force Unleashed, Fallen Order takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Players take on the role of Cal Kestis, a Jedi Padawan who survived the execution of Order 66. He teams up with other survivors to try and restore the Jedi Order, but they are relentlessly pursued by the Inquisitors, specifically the Second and Ninth Sisters.
Although Fallen Order can be difficult for players new to Soulslike games, the controls are easy to pick up as Cal Kestis rediscovers his Jedi training. This game and its sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, offer one of the best Star Wars adventures in recent years.
3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars’ Definitive RPG
As a huge Star Wars fan, I think newcomers to the Old Republic era will really enjoy The Old Republic game – it looks amazing and is fun to play. But if you really want to experience one of the greatest Star Wars stories ever told, you absolutely have to check out Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It’s a bit older, but trust me, it’s worth it!

Developed as the very first turn-based role-playing video game in the Star Wars universe, Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) takes place around 300 years before Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR). The story centers on a character who has lost their memory and becomes involved in a conflict between the Galactic Republic and two former Jedi, Darth Revan and Darth Malak, who have turned to the dark side as Sith.
While the gameplay in KOTOR might feel a little old-fashioned now, its story remains one of the greatest ever told in a video game. Filled with memorable characters and surprising plot twists, it’s a truly beloved game – so much so that it’s the first Star Wars game to receive a complete remake for current gaming systems.
2. LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
The Best LEGO Game Ever Made
Often, the most enjoyable games are surprisingly simple, and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga is a great example of that.
The LEGO Complete Saga combines the first two LEGO Star Wars games, bringing the comedic, brick-building action to all six of George Lucas’s original Star Wars films. Players can enjoy the game solo or with a friend in local co-op.
Many LEGO Star Wars games have been released over the years, but the original titles remain incredibly charming and enjoyable for players of all ages. There’s something special about smashing Battle Droids and Stormtroopers into pieces and figuring out the LEGO puzzles.
1. Star Wars: Battlefront II
A Perfect Game Through and Through
Star Wars fans often debate which game is the best, but I believe everyone should play Pandemic Studios’ Star Wars: Battlefront II at least once. It’s a classic from 2005 that truly stands out.
Released in 2005, Battlefront II was a groundbreaking Star Wars game that let players experience famous battles from all six movies. It offered both single-player campaigns and exciting online multiplayer, including ground combat and epic space battles. Players could even board and take down enemy ships from the inside.
Beyond the standard gameplay and multiplayer options, Battlefront II boasts a fantastic single-player campaign. You experience the Clone Wars through the eyes of a soldier in the 501st Legion, witness the dramatic events of Order 66, and ultimately become a Stormtrooper. This makes it one of the most unforgettable and replayable Star Wars games ever created.
