Star Wars: Hunters Could Be Sitting On a Goldmine of Future Content

As a devoted Star Wars fan who grew up playing countless hours of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds and Battlefront II on my trusty old Xbox, I must say that Star Wars: Hunters has definitely piqued my interest. Despite its rocky start with critics, it’s managed to carve out a niche for itself in the vast galaxy far, far away of mobile gaming, which is no small feat!

Following several disappointing multiplayer releases under the Star Wars banner, such as Star Wars: Force Arena and the 2017 reboot of Battlefront 2, Disney and Lucasfilm are now trying their hand at a fresh attempt with Star Wars: Hunters. This game offers a free-to-play hero shooter experience set within the Star Wars universe, where teams battle it out in arenas modeled after famous Star Wars locations. The roster includes 14 diverse characters, ranging from a Rodian chemist and a Dark Side Force user to a Miraluka Hunter, a pair of Jawa brothers, and more. Zynga, the developer behind Star Wars: Hunters, plans to introduce new heroes and additional content in upcoming seasonal updates.

The game Star Wars: Hunters, when first introduced earlier this year, didn’t receive overwhelming praise from critics. It only scored 60 on OpenCritic, based on a mere 10 reviews. However, it seems that the game has still found its niche audience. For instance, on Google Play Store, it has attracted favorable user ratings and has been downloaded more than a million times. Despite this initial reception, Star Wars: Hunters appears to be thriving for Zynga and Take-Two Interactive. However, the game could potentially achieve even greater success if it capitalizes on its vast crossover possibilities, particularly with upcoming Star Wars games.

Star Wars: Hunters Should Collaborate With Upcoming Star Wars Games

Many AAA Star Wars Games Are in Development

With EA no longer holding the exclusive rights to the Star Wars franchise, there’s been a surge in Star Wars game development not seen in over a decade. The most imminent release is “Star Wars Outlaws,” an open-world action-adventure title developed by Ubisoft, slated for launch on August 30, 2024. Alongside this, Respawn Entertainment is working on multiple Star Wars projects, such as a sequel to the 2023 game “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” and a strategy game in partnership with Bit Reactor, a new studio based in Maryland. Additionally, Quantic Dream is creating a story-driven adventure game titled “Star Wars: Eclipse,” which takes place during the High Republic Era.

In addition to four other projects, Amy Hennig, the creator of Uncharted, is also working on a Star Wars game that hasn’t been named yet, in collaboration with her studio at Skydance Media. Moreover, Saber Interactive is currently remaking the popular 2003 RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for PS5 and PC. However, it might take some time, or even never come out, due to the significant development hurdles they’ve encountered with this project.

Zynga Could Increase Star Wars: Hunters’ Popularity With Seasonal Crossovers

Given the numerous Star Wars games set to release soon, Star Wars: Hunters stands a prime opportunity to leverage these game launches with crossover events featuring fresh skins, arenas, and playable characters. Zynga might even structure entire seasonal updates around these upcoming games. For example, they could introduce a Star Wars Outlaws-themed season this August and include Kay Vess in the game’s lineup of heroes. In the future, Zynga could also join forces with Respawn Entertainment and Saber Interactive to make Cal Kestis and Bastila Shan playable characters within Star Wars: Hunters as well.

The use of crossovers is a great method of attracting new players to live service games. Not only can it spice up a GAAS title’s content roadmap, it can also provide a way for fans to see their favorite characters reunited in one place. As such, Zynga and Take-Two Interactive should work with other companies to add some SW collaborations to Star Wars: Hunters and, thus, increase the popularity of the free-to-play hero shooter.
