As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the galaxy far, far away, I have to say that BD-1 has become one of my most cherished companions in gaming. The bond between Cal Kestis and this adorable droid was undeniably strong in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and it’s a shame that their interactions seem to take a backseat in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
In Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal Kestis and his droid companion BD-1 spent most of their time together, leaving less opportunity for bonding with Cere Junda or Greez Dritus. This close relationship made them appear as true companions throughout the game. BD-1 not only physically clings to Cal during gameplay but also cheers him on by chirping and trilling when he successfully lands an electric shock attack, even against formidable enemies like Darth Vader. In Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, there are more characters introduced, unfortunately reducing the focus on BD-1’s interactions.
In the bustling town of Rambler’s Reach on Koboh, the game “Survivor” is brimming with a multitude of non-player characters (NPCs) for Cal to encounter and engage with at Pyloon’s Saloon. Previously, Cal had a team he was working with, but they all met their end in the early stages of the game. A significant portion of “Survivor” revolves around Cal attempting to reunite his old crew. Unfortunately, there isn’t much room for Cal and BD-1 to enjoy lighthearted or action-packed moments in “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor”. It seems challenging to enhance or improve the capabilities of the endearing droid BD-1 in the sequel of the game.
Star Wars Jedi’s BD-1 Doesn’t Have Much Higher to Ascend to in Gameplay
Respawn has a challenging path ahead as they envision the future beyond “Survivor” with BD-1’s technological prowess. The innovative feature of BD-1, its slicing trick, has been widely appreciated by players who can locate terminals or skills to manipulate various types of droid enemies, such as overriding them, or navigate laser gates and other machinery.
Of course, BD-1 has also been instrumental in traversal when Cal needs to hop on a zip-line.
In Fallen Order, there are numerous chests that BD-1 can cut open using an upgrade acquired, whereas Survivor offers a more even mix of chests and Force-related activities to interact with. Additionally, environmental puzzles are abundant in the sequel, especially during endgame exploration in Koboh and Jedha’s hidden corners, where the functions of BD-1 such as the Koboh matter spray and electro darts become crucial in Survivor.
One aspect of the show Survivor that often goes unnoticed is BD-1’s binoculars, as his 3D holomaps offer similar environmental data and context on a broader scale with more intricate details. It’s possible that the final chapter of Star Wars Jedi could find some utility in binoculars if they were reimagined, but it may not be essential or a necessary feature for BD-1.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Sequel Should Make BD-1 More of an Active Companion
It’s worth noting that while BD-1 can scripted attack or disable enemies during certain moments, it lacks a skill that allows it to do so independently when players are fighting. Giving BD-1 the ability to actively participate in combat, perhaps by attacking or temporarily incapacitating enemies on its own, could make it feel more integral to battles. This would go beyond just ejecting stim canisters as requested by Cal and would make BD-1 seem like a true combat partner rather than an accessory.
Regardless, it could prove difficult to elevate BD-1’s significance within the plot as his primary purpose in the story was already fulfilled and concluded completely in the game Fallen Order.
The friendship between Cal and BD-1 doesn’t require further enhancement, but it’s probable that players have witnessed most of BD-1’s development by the end of Star Wars Jedi‘s final chapter. As a result, developers at Respawn should include opportunities for BD-1 to play a significant role in the third game’s story if they want BD-1 to be more involved and impactful.
