As a lifelong Star Wars fan who’s been through the highs and lows of this expansive universe, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when it comes to the villains of the Jedi games. The dark side has always had its allure, but none more so than the enigmatic Taron Malicos from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
As a devoted Star Wars fan, I’m thrilled to share that the Star Wars Jedi games are rumored to form a trilogy, leaving just one final chapter to tie up any lingering plot threads. Throughout my journey in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Cal Kestis has been the solitary beacon of hope in a galaxy devoid of other Force-wielding individuals, save for Jedi Masters Cere Junda and Eno Cordova. But being alone doesn’t mean he’s lacked companionship in his quest to find his place among the stars.
Specifically, Trilla Suduri’s Second Sister and Taron Malicos are profoundly relevant characters in “Fallen Order”, but “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” stumbles in its portrayal. Bode’s motivations, driven solely by his daughter’s protection, strangely waver when he unexpectedly declines to seek shelter on Tanalorr with the Hidden Path, a decision that wouldn’t impact him or Kata in any way. This surprising action of his is leading to him handing over the Jedha archive to the Empire and embracing the dark side. As Respawn’s series prepares for its final installment, there’s an eagerness for another relic of the Jedi Order whose ethics and principles have become chaotic, much like Malicos’, following the Purge.
Taron Malicos Refreshingly Serves as a Villain with No Grey Area
In the game Fallen Order, Taron Malicos serves as an antagonist who lacks complexity in his actions but gains depth through his backstory. Although his goals are questionable, his resentment towards the Jedi for being an outdated and failing order is understandable considering he was once a General within their ranks during the Clone Wars.
Despite initially appearing as a formidable adversary, once the robe is taken off and his body markings are exposed, it becomes evident that Malicos has gone too far into darkness. His reasoning for misusing the Nightsisters’ power on Dathomir fades into insignificance due to his extremely villainous portrayal, especially when he wields dual lightsabers with red blades. Had Malicos been the main antagonist in “Fallen Order”, it would have been detrimental, but with Trilla Suduri playing that role and being both tragic and empathetic, it’s perfect to have Malicos as an antagonist who players can wholeheartedly despise, as his schemes are over-the-top or absurd.
He’s a consequence of a fallen Order who spiraled too deeply and it’s that baser, almost animalistic villainy that allows him to be unique in a game full of conflicted or tortured souls along the Force’s arbitrary spectrum of light and dark. If Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s sequel could find a way to replicate Malicos’ occult or power-hungry nature in another villain it could provide another beautiful, ancillary contrast to a main antagonist whose actions can be compelling, divisive, and even defensible given proper context.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s Sequel Likely Has No Room for Such Nostalgic Grievances Anymore
In the broader Star Wars timeline, when the story of Survivor unfolds, there’s an issue with introducing another antagonist similar to Malicos, as it has been over 10 years since Order 66 was executed. Creating a zealous character who is still deeply affected by that event and portraying this impact in a vivid and conflicted manner could be challenging.
Over time, Bode transformed into a resilient individual who opted to collaborate with the ISB to safeguard his daughter instead of rebelling against a hostile planet’s treacherous tribes. In the next installment of Survivor, time may accelerate, leaving us guessing about the condition of its potential adversaries. Regardless, it would be disappointing if Star Wars Jedi concluded without presenting one final villain as brutal and uncommon as Taron Malicos.
