A remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 might be in the works, according to a new report by Stephen Totilo at Game File. This news comes over four years after Aspyr first announced a remake of the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a game fans haven’t heard anything about since the initial announcement.
The remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has faced a lot of challenges during its development. In July 2022, about ten months after it was first announced at the PlayStation Showcase in September 2021, Bloomberg reported that the game was indefinitely delayed. This followed a demo presentation to Lucasfilm and Sony, after which the game’s design and art directors were let go. A month later, another Bloomberg report stated that Aspyr was no longer working on the project, and Saber Interactive had taken over as the lead developer. This change was officially confirmed in March by Saber Interactive’s CEO, Matthew Karch.
A Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 Remake Could Be On The Way
Although Saber Interactive is reportedly still working on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, we haven’t seen any new trailers or official updates since they took over the project from Aspyr in 2022. However, recent court documents shared by Game File’s Stephen Totilo suggest that a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 might also be in the works.
A recent report from Game File, published December 8th, details how Disney’s legal team prevented the release of a fan-made restoration of cut content for the Nintendo Switch version of Knights of the Old Republic II. Aspyr, the company that ported the game to Switch in June 2022, had attempted to include the popular “Sith Lords Restored Content Modification,” but Disney blocked it due to concerns about legal permissions for the original mod creators.
Disney reportedly prevented Aspyr from releasing a fan-made mod restoring cut content from KOTOR 2. This cancellation led to two lawsuits from people who claimed Aspyr misled them with promises of the content. Though the lawsuits were settled privately, legal documents released as part of the cases reveal a project called “Juliet” – a complete remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 – was being developed at the same time as the remake of the original game.
With Aspyr no longer developing the Star Wars: KOTOR remake, many assumed the KOTOR 2 remake was cancelled as well. However, recent legal documents suggest plans for the KOTOR 2 remake were still in place as of March 2025. Even if Saber Interactive is still considering the project, there’s no certainty it will actually be made. Saber will likely want to see how the first KOTOR remake is received by players and critics before fully committing to a sequel, and that first game isn’t expected to release for some time.
