Star Wars Outlaws Confirms Kay Vess Shoots First

As a seasoned Star Wars fan with a soft spot for the galaxy’s most intriguing rogues, I can’t help but be captivated by the feisty and fearless Kay Vess from Star Wars Outlaws. Her life experiences have molded her into a unique character who doesn’t hesitate to take matters into her own hands – or blaster in this case!

In the world of Star Wars enthusiasts, few debates are as enduring as the question of who fired first in the encounter between Han Solo and Greedo. It’s always intriguing to imagine what other charming roguish characters might have done in that situation. For our protagonist from the Star Wars Outlaws series, Kay Vess, there’s no ambiguity about it.

In a recent conversation with Game Rant, developers at Massive revealed that the character Kay from Star Wars Outlaws is unlike Han Solo or Lando Calrissian, but she’s still a rogue. Given this, it’s only natural to ponder if she would act similarly in a crisis, such as shooting first. When asked about this, narrative director Navid Khavari provided a straightforward response.

Star Wars Outlaws Begs the Question: Who Shoots First?

The question stems from a famous, or perhaps infamous, difference between the original version of Star Wars: A New Hope and its later remasters. Solo gets cornered by the bounty hunter Greedo who is looking to collect on the price Jabba the Hutt put on Solo’s head for unpaid debts. In a scene that plays out extremely fast, the tense conversation breaks down and blaster fire is exchanged.

In the initial release of the movie, I, as Han Solo, was the one who fired first at Greedo. However, when George Lucas reworked the original trilogy, he introduced some contentious alterations – among these was swapping their shooting sequence, making it appear that Greedo shot first. Lucas believed this change made my act of self-defense against the bounty hunter more justifiable. But for me, Kay, if I found myself in a similar predicament, I wouldn’t hesitate to defend myself – but not out of fear or self-preservation. According to Khavari, my reason would stem from a different motivation.

“Without a doubt, Kay will act first. She’s not concerned with self-defense; if someone intends to harm Nix, it simply won’t happen under her watch.”

Khavari considers Kay and her sidekick Nix as being on par with renowned Star Wars pairs such as Solo and Chewbacca, or Cal Kestis and BD-1. While developing their characters, Khavari emphasized ensuring that Kay and Nix don’t come across as master and pet but rather as kin to highlight the strength of their bond. Additionally, the team imbued Nix with the endearing qualities of real-life pets, believing that this attention to detail would be worthwhile.

Kay’s ambition for a future filled with freedom for herself and Nix propels her forward in her profession as a rogue in the Star Wars universe, steering the game towards its main event: the most daring heist in the galaxy. The allure of a substantial payoff, her ship the Trailblazer, and Kay’s determination to secure a future with her loyal companion are what drive her the most.

As a dedicated gamer, I can relate. For me, safeguarding my in-game family – or in this case, Nix – would be the only motive I’d require to pull the trigger first. Just like Solo protecting himself and his spaceship, Kay prioritizes her loved ones above all else, which for her means shooting first.
