Star Wars Outlaws Kay Vess is a Scoundrel Through and Through

As a seasoned gamer with years of intergalactic adventures under my belt, I can confidently say that Kay Vess from Star Wars Outlaws is a scoundrel worth rooting for. Her humble beginnings and empathetic heart set her apart from other scoundrels in the galaxy, reminding me a bit of Han Solo without the smugness (or the Wookiee).

It’s still unclear exactly where the character Kay Vess from “Star Wars Outlaws” fits on the galaxy’s scale of rogues, as Han Solo has been referenced in comparison due to their similar backgrounds. However, the creators, Massive and Ubisoft, are likely emphasizing her scoundrel role given its importance to the game’s protagonist. Although there are indications that Kay may not always make the most moral choices, she also seems to have a soft spot due to her humble origins, which could make her a scoundrel with a heart.

In the Star Wars Outlaws game, it’s clear that Kay is a rogue character, and his development throughout the game mirrors this perfectly, allowing players to make choices based on various in-game decisions. When Game Rant asked about what motivates Kay, the response from Marthe Jonkers, Navid Khavari, and Mathias Karlson, the associate art director, narrative director, and game director respectively, is that it has a twofold explanation.

Star Wars Outlaws’ Kay Vess Wouldn’t Be the Scoundrel She is Without Nix

Kay has some background in theft, but her aspirations have always been to escape Canto Bight’s Worker’s District and leave this world behind, as the stark contrast between wealth and poverty is striking there. In comparison to Han Solo at the time of Star Wars Outlaws, Kay lacks experience, which Jonkers noted significantly influenced her character development.

“Embodying the stealthy allure of my newfound thieving ways, I’ve subtly integrated various elements into my appearance. From the hairpin I discreetly transform into a dataspike, to the quiet tread of my soft boots that allow me to move unnoticed among the bustling streets of Canto Bight.”

“During the development phase, her jacket underwent several color transformations, yet one consistent aspect was the presence of Nix. Working together, we conceptualized them as a pair, and his style significantly impacted Kay’s appearance, from the scratches on the back of her jacket to the small Nix tattoo on her wrist.”

Khavari highlights that Nix serves as a character where Kay can let her guard down and truly excel, which isn’t unexpected given Han Solo’s close bond with Chewbacca. In essence, it appears that the relationship between Kay and Nix is central to the dynamic of the characters in Outlaws, much like the iconic partnership seen in Star Wars between Han Solo and Chewbacca.

“It seems to me that there’s a special bond between Kay and Nix, as they have grown up together since Kay was very young. Given that Kay isn’t someone who opens up his trust readily, Nix serves as a breach in his protective shell – she represents the softness, the vulnerability within him.”

Star Wars Outlaws’ Kay Vess is a Work in Progress with a Sympathetic Backstory

In “Star Wars Outlaws”, the character Kay gets an exclusive chance to revisit Canto Bight, just like we saw in “The Last Jedi”. What makes this intriguing is that there’s a lot of story relevance tied to her going back there or moving on from familiar places. Since Kay grew up in Canto Bight, she might harbor strong emotions about the place, and possibly it was only through the game’s main plot that she got the chance to leave. It will be fascinating to observe how Kay’s view of Cantonica influences our own perception of it throughout the game.

1. “She found it tough to get by, so she resorted to stealing. She saw the wealthy and influential figures frequenting the casinos as those manipulating the universe’s course, a lifestyle that was foreign to her.”

In terms of the transformation of Kay’s character throughout the game, players can anticipate seeing a hardened, experienced scoundrel by the end, with her appearance and actions shaped significantly by the choices made during gameplay. The game Star Wars Outlaws is said to provide a wide range of player choice in this aspect. Consequently, the way players influence Kay’s persona as a scoundrel could unlock a plethora of thrilling adventures as she and Nix uncover new gear and talents across the galaxy, as suggested by Karlson.

As an explorer at heart, I relish in the freedom that this world offers. There’s no need to adhere to predefined enemy or player levels here. Instead, I can roam and wander as I please, setting my own path through this vast landscape.

“Through this, you’ll discover fresh skills, gain new resources and tools, including those for collaboration with Nix. Plus, you might stumble upon some clever techniques that Nix uses!”

Characters labeled as ‘scoundrels’ may not always act selflessly, and this could potentially apply to Kay if players manage to steer her towards more honorable actions. However, the scoundrel label doesn’t diminish Kay’s character in Star Wars Outlaws, especially considering her attachment to Nix and her interactions with strangers or even members of dangerous criminal organizations. This contrast between her actions and her scoundrel status will undoubtedly make for an interesting narrative.
