As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming title, “Star Wars Outlaws.” Having grown up with the original trilogy and exploring the vast universe through various media over the years, I’m thrilled to see how Massive Entertainment is blending elements from different eras to create a unique experience.
Star Wars continues to be a massive force in pop culture, and the upcoming game, “Star Wars Outlaws,” aims to offer players an exclusive adventure that only the Star Wars universe can deliver. Slipping into the role of rogue Kay Vess, “Star Wars Outlaws” intends to grant fans the freedom to traverse the galaxy within an open-world setting. In partnership with Lucasfilm Games, Massive Entertainment determined that the ideal location for this Scoundrel Fantasy would lie between the occurrences of “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi.”
When developing the Star Wars universe for the game Star Wars Outlaws, the team is drawing inspiration from various media projects throughout the series’ history to create a unified world. This includes elements like enforcer droids seen in The High Republic novels and The Clone Wars TV show, Kijimi before its introduction in The Rise of Skywalker, and the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate from Solo: A Star Wars Story. In a recent interview with Game Rant, team members such as art and world director Benedikt Podlesnigg discussed their inspirations and references. It can be challenging to decide which sources to utilize given the abundance of available options, but in the case of Krayt Dragons, Massive Entertainment received some assistance.
Star Wars Outlaws Uses The Mandalorian Krayt Dragon as Reference
The basic form of a Krayt Dragon is shown in “A New Hope,” yet its significant debut occurs in the game “Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds.” Subsequently, they’ve been featured in “KOTOR” and more recently in “The Mandalorian.” Each portrayal slightly varies, prompting curiosity about the design of Krayt Dragons in “Star Wars Outlaws.” Interestingly, their appearance in “The Mandalorian” isn’t just an influence; it builds upon that foundation.
Krayt Dragons in Star Wars Outlaws
The Mandalorian series appears to have resolved, in a definitive manner, the design inconsistencies that Krayt Dragons had previously experienced. It seems that Lucasfilm is making an effort to ensure consistency within the species since they collaborated with Massive Entertainment on their version of the Krayt Dragon for Star Wars Outlaws. When asked about adapting this desert creature for Outlaws, Podlesnigg explained how Lucasfilm provided assistance in designing the Krayt Dragons.
“During our game’s development, we got the unique opportunity to have The Mandalorian battle a different Krayt Dragon. To achieve an authentic representation, we collaborated closely with Lucasfilm, who generously provided us with the CGI model of their show for reference.”
Referencing the digital model of The Mandalorian for Star Wars Outlaws offers an exceptionally direct interpretation of “drawing from the source material.” However, Podlesnigg does note that the Mandalorian confronts a distinct dragon in his tale, thus maintaining a distinctive appearance exclusive to Outlaws. This fearsome creature will make its appearance when Star Wars Outlaws is launched on August 30.
