Although some might attribute its popularity solely to its open-world gameplay, “Star Wars Outlaws” may also have unveiled a fresh type of protagonist in the Star Wars universe.

In “Star Wars Outlaws”, players once more don human personas, aiming to leave their mark across the galaxy. The narrative unfolds as an expected outlaw-centric journey, offering a nice shift from the numerous Jedi-focused escapades of yore. However, what sets this game apart is the introduction of the unique droid companion ND-5, unlike any character previously featured in Star Wars video games. With Ubisoft now exploring the realm of droids, a future installment could fully embrace this concept.

As a gamer, it’s been amazing to take control of humanoid characters in most major Star Wars video games, like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi Knight, becoming a Jedi, or Star Wars Squadrons and Rogue Squadron, piloting starfighters. It’s been fantastic to explore the Star Wars story from various perspectives. However, what I’ve noticed is that the franchise hasn’t ventured much into the realm of droids.

As a devoted Star Wars enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of engaging in only a few video games that allowed me to explore the life of a droid. The Star Wars Battlefront series granted me the opportunity to embody a Battle Droid, while the LEGO Star Wars titles showcased numerous playable droid characters. However, none have truly matched what Star Wars Outlaws achieved with ND-5. Now that I’ve spent countless hours working alongside such a droid, I eagerly anticipate a future Star Wars game that will fully realize this untapped potential and immerse me even deeper in the droid experience.

ND-5 Presents Star Wars With a New Approach

In the game ‘Star Wars Outlaws’, ND-5 stands by Kay Vess consistently. He provides her with valuable advice, directing her towards her forthcoming goals, and aiding her at every juncture. As the story unfolds, their bond deepens, culminating in an unbreakable friendship by the game’s conclusion. This unique dynamic adds an engaging twist to traditional Star Wars video games, hinting at a promising expansion for the narrative in future installments.

As a dedicated Star Wars fan, I’ve been yearning for a game that gives a droid perspective as profoundly as Star Wars Outlaws does. It’s unfortunate, given the wealth of compelling tales that could be brought to life through this unique lens. The films have been exploring such narratives for years with characters like C-3PO, IG-11 from The Mandalorian, and K-2SO from Rogue One. It seems only fitting that a video game should mirror this trend. If the character is crafted with compelling writing, it could result in something truly remarkable.

At the moment, it seems unlikely that an upcoming “Star Wars” game will mirror the style of “Star Wars: Outlaws”. Unfortunately, given its poor performance, it’s possible we won’t encounter the ND-5 droid again. However, let’s keep our fingers crossed for a future game where a droid serves as the central character instead of just a sidekick, offering an experience unlike any other players have had before.
