- Fans will have to accept Windu’s fate, as his return would complicate Star Wars‘ narrative.
Among the captivating personalities in the Star Wars universe, one character continues to spark heated discussions about their departure from this distant galaxy even over a decade after the fact. However, another character from the prequel era has recently disclosed that his demise was initially intended to carry a much more significant and impactful conclusion.
As a devoted follower, I can’t help but marvel at the immense impact Star Wars has had on the realm of science fiction. This sprawling multimedia universe offers tales that span across millennia and a galaxy teeming with captivating new journeys. The upcoming trilogy may have received some positive updates from Daisy Ridley, Star Wars’ leading lady, yet fans remain deeply engrossed in characters from earlier storylines.
Lately, there’s been a revitalized interest in the prequels, which has also reawakened old debates and fan theories surrounding notable figures from that era. The character generating the most buzz is Mace Windu, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in the prequel films. Fans can’t seem to shake off one of the franchise’s most popular theories: that Mace Windu miraculously survived his apparently fatal duel with Chancellor Palpatine at the end of the prequel saga.
In a twist for Star Wars enthusiasts still debating Windu’s duel with Palpatine, it has been disclosed that the original plan for this pivotal event called for a different character from the prequels. According to Daniel Logan, who portrayed young Boba Fett in Episode II: Attack of the Clones, the initial idea was for him, not Emperor Palpatine, to eliminate the Jedi Order’s most formidable fighter. At a recent GalaxyCon Richmond event, Logan shared this intriguing tidbit, stating, “He should have been taken care of, and it should have been by me.” Citing Palpatine’s ineffectiveness and Maul’s multiple resurrections, Logan suggested that his character would have been more fitting to avenge his fallen father. Furthermore, he revealed that George Lucas had intended for him to feature prominently in Revenge of the Sith, possibly even reprising an arena scene with Mace Windu, as evidenced by a storyboard already created for this purpose.
Mace Windu intended to attack Boba Fett similarly to how he dealt with Jango, but since Boba had previously known the outcome, I activated the jetpacks and flipped upside down or on my back. While flying backward, I used Jango’s blasters to shoot him in the stomach, leading to Mace Windu’s demise. Excitedly, I found myself at Lucasfilm, only to be told that they would hold me for a year. I kept asking if it was my turn yet.
Or:
When Mace Windu aimed to confront Boba Fett as he had Jango, things took an unexpected turn because Boba had prior knowledge of the situation. In response, I ignited the jetpacks and flipped over, shooting him with Jango’s blasters in his stomach while flying backward. My moment came at Lucasfilm when they informed me that I would be held for a year, but I was eager and kept asking if it was my turn yet.
The proposed direction for “Revenge of the Sith” would have significantly altered the storyline, as it would have provided a more decisive ending for Mace Windu instead of his on-screen death at the hands of Palpatine. This change also would have shed light on what happened to Boba Fett after Jango’s demise in “Attack of the Clones”. Although some fans had ideas about these plans from related media, Logan further explained why these plans were altered. Jackson reportedly visited Lucas and said, “I don’t think that this young kid should have the power to kill someone who sits on the Jedi Council. And plus, I don’t want to be killed by a young punk”. Since Logan was just 15 when “Attack of the Clones” released and still a minor during “Revenge of the Sith”, he doesn’t harbor resentment over Jackson vetoing his significant moment. However, he humorously suggested ways for Jackson to make amends, such as offering him a role in the Marvel series or creating an alliance with Iron Man instead.
It’s unlikely that Mace Windu will reappear in the Star Wars universe, as his return might create inconsistencies in the storyline that has already been established. Although it’s intriguing to imagine a scenario where one of the franchise’s lingering questions could be resolved, many fans may feel that a more suitable ending for Mace Windu would be his demise on Coruscant after being betrayed and struck down with Sith Lightning from a high building.
