Despite the debatable and sometimes contentious use of digital effects in past space sagas, such as de-aging or reviving original actors portraying legacy characters, this latest approach represents a clear shift, one that unquestionably improves the experience. Here’s why fans can eagerly anticipate a fresh perspective on a familiar character.

Star Wars Timeline Problems

Right from its debut in 1977, the Star Wars series has been unfolding a narrative non-chronologically. George Lucas intentionally started the story mid-stream, launching with what was later known as the fourth part of an episodic tale. It wasn’t until more than two decades later that viewers were given the chance to witness the true first installment of the series.

Through this method, the Star Wars universe has consistently hopped across its own chronology. Post the Disney acquisition, the leaps have become more extensive. Now, spanning films and streaming series, there are projects scattered everywhere on the timeline. For instance, The Acolyte is set centuries before any of the movies, while The Last Jedi takes place decades after the initial trilogy. Yet, the main franchise often revisits a key juncture in the timeline: around the era of the original trilogy.

Each of these projects, including Rogue One, The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Skeleton Crew, Andor, and more, are all situated within a brief timeframe relative to the original Star Wars trilogy. This strategic placement is consistent with Disney’s initial financial objective upon acquiring Star Wars: leveraging nostalgia and providing a sense of familiarity for fans. After all, their debut project was The Force Awakens, which deliberately returned to the series’ roots and largely disregarded the prequels. By setting these stories within a universe where many iconic characters like Luke, Leia, and Han are still active, they tap into the essence of Star Wars during its prime years.

Star Wars Stories Don’t Age, But Actors Do

In my perspective, it seems fans aren’t quite ready for their beloved heroes to age. They prefer to keep them at the pinnacle of perfection, preserved in the bubble of nostalgia forever, much like an untouched action figure within its packaging. However, the fact remains that actors such as Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford have grown older, posing a challenge for franchises like Star Wars when it comes to integrating these veteran characters into fresh narratives.

Instead of replacing, the franchise often chooses to employ innovative digital technology to maintain the original actors. This started with Leia and Tarkin’s roles in Rogue One, and extended to Carrie Fisher’s posthumous digital resurrection in The Rise of Skywalker and Luke Skywalker appearing in the second season of The Mandalorian. The franchise seems determined to stick with this approach.

An intriguing aspect of this situation is that, prior to digital revival becoming feasible, the franchise had replaced original actors for legacy characters. This approach was incredibly successful, and fans didn’t demand that Alec Guinness be digitally recreated and superimposed over Ewan McGregor’s face in The Phantom Menace back in 1999. Instead, George Lucas chose to cast a gifted young actor, Ewan McGregor, for the role, who has since become a beloved character within the franchise and an essential part of its history.

In the film Solo, the character Han Solo was played by the exceptionally skilled Alden Ehrenreich, replacing Harrison Ford in the role. Previously, it appeared that Lucasfilm believed audiences would reject a change of actor in a legacy character, due to financial challenges with the movie. However, many fans admired both Ehrenreich’s Han and Donald Glover’s Lando (also recast), finding them to be standout performances in the film. A full-length movie featuring de-aged versions of Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams superimposed onto younger actors seems like an actual nightmare. It was shortsighted of Lucasfilm to think they erred by choosing talented newcomers over this approach.

Andor Brings Change to Star Wars

It’s great news that as the second season of “Andor” is about to debut, it seems like the franchise has undergone a shift in perspective, which seems incredibly beneficial for each project and the Star Wars saga overall. A genuine actor delivering a genuine performance and making authentic decisions will always surpass any digital imitation in quality.

Over the past few years, these digital likenesses have become increasingly sophisticated due to progress in technological tools. In the case of Luke Skywalker in “The Mandalorian,” AI was employed for both his appearance and voice. However, what’s striking is that they seem less authentic. When a digitized version of young Mark Hamill emerges in a project, it doesn’t evoke Luke Skywalker; instead, it feels like an artificial imitation of him. To rectify this, recasting these roles provides new actors the opportunity to breathe life into these cherished characters again. Fingers crossed that future projects like “Andor” will offer us a chance to witness such revitalized legacy characters.
