Stardew Valley Creator Comments on Controversial Infinity Nikki Collab

Eric Barone, the sole developer responsible for the beloved farm simulation game Stardew Valley, supports his decision to team up with action-adventure game Infinity Nikki despite the controversy it has stirred. Known for delivering numerous free updates driven by player suggestions, Barone’s popularity among indie gaming enthusiasts is well-deserved. However, the backlash from fans over the recent announcement of this collaboration represents an unusual instance of unfavorable media attention for him.

The remarkable journey of ‘Stardew Valley’ is one that only a handful of independent video game creators might fantasize about. Initially conceptualized by Barone as a leisurely pastime, this farming and lifestyle simulation game has reportedly surpassed 41 million sales since its debut on PC in 2016. Its enduring popularity propelled Barone into full-time video game development, as he is now engaged in creating his second major production titled ‘Haunted Chocolatier’.

Stardew Valley Creator Stands By Infinity Nikki Crossover Decision

The farming game, Stardew Valley, has been caught up in a storm of criticism due to its partnership with Infinity Nikki, a move that fans of the latter game find distracting. They’ve been vocal about ongoing issues since late April, such as excessive monetization, changes in storyline, technical glitches, and what seems like censorship towards critics. However, the game’s creator, ConcernedApe (Barone), has defended this partnership on his Twitter account, explaining that he agrees to collaborations for two reasons: either because he personally enjoys the other game or because he believes Stardew Valley players will find it enjoyable.

The collaboration event, which is part of the 1.9 update, will debut in Infinity Nikki on September 1st. Infold Games has kept quiet about the specifics of this partnership, but promises a series of cozy surprises and an abundance of wonders. A teaser for the event, shared on Infinity Nikki’s Twitter account, suggests that Stardew Valley’s cute Junimos might be featured, as they are depicted harvesting crops in a pixelated Stardew Valley farm before being whisked away to the more realistic world of Infinity Nikki.

Barone’s post suggests that he might not have been paid for his collaboration with Infinity Nikki, as was the case with previous crossovers of Stardew Valley with other indie games like Terraria and Balatro. Interestingly, Barone clarifies in a comment on his post that he doesn’t seek monetary gain from these collaborations, since he already earns enough from selling his own game. Although the post doesn’t explicitly mention Infinity Nikki, it implies that this latest collaboration was also done without compensation.
