Stardew Valley: How To Befriend Gus

As a seasoned farmer and connoisseur of fine cuisine, I must say that forming a friendship with Gus is not only delightful but also highly beneficial for any aspiring farmer. With his wealth of knowledge and knack for cooking up delicious dishes, Gus is truly a treasure in Stardew Valley.

The owner of Pelican Town’s Stardrop Saloon, Gus, is among the most endearing characters found throughout Stardew Valley. Known for his kind-hearted and cheerful disposition, Gus forms friendships with everyone in town, including the player character.

Absolutely, players need to make an effort first to earn Gus’s trust and friendship, much like with any villager in town. Each character, including Gus, has personal preferences, aspirations, and concerns. By presenting him thoughtful gifts or assisting him in collecting ingredients for new recipes, farmers can win his favor and enjoy the advantages that come with it.

Gift Guide

Visitors can demonstrate kindness towards Gus by dropping by to present a token of appreciation and engage in a brief conversation. Look for him at his saloon whenever it’s open. Also, keep in mind that gifts given on his birthday, Summer 8, will have an eightfold impact on friendship points.

Among the top choices for Gus, each gift you present could potentially boost our friendship with him by a significant 80 points. So, when aiming to gain his favor, make sure to have these thoughtful presents ready.

  • Cooked dishes: , ,
  • All universal loves

Liked Gifts

If Loved gifts aren’t easily available, especially at the beginning of the game when Gus’s might be scarce, these alternatives can also work quite well. Each of them raises friendship by a significant 45 points.

  • All universal likes, except for (e.g. cooked dishes, artisan goods, vegetables, flowers)

Disliked & Hated Gifts

Any of the following items will decrease friendship when given to Gus. Though Disliked gifts aren’t as bad as Hated, it’s best to avoid any drop in friendship points, so don’t give these to Gus.

  • All universal dislikes (e.g. fish, building materials, geodes, seeds)
  • All universal hates (e.g. trash, fossils, monster loot)

Interactions & Effects On Friendship

Quests

  • Fish Stew – On the 26th of Winter, Gus will send the player a letter asking them to catch him an albacore for a fish stew. Farmers who do so will receive 400g, and friendship will increase by one heart.
  • Wanted: Lobster – On Fall 6th of Year 2, Gus requests a lobster to whip up a bisque. As before, this will increase friendship by one heart, as well as rewarding players with 500g.
  • Exotic Spirits – Gus is hoping to bring some sunshine to the cold Stardew Valley winter. On the 19th of Winter in Year 2, he’ll ask for a coconut to make tropical drinks at the Saloon. Players reap the rewards of one friendship heart and 600g.
  • “Help Wanted” Objectives – As with any other villager, Gus may post on the bulletin outside Pierre’s, requesting a random item. Players will receive 150 friendship points for completing these requests.

At a suitable time post the theater’s opening, players have the option to accompany Gus to the cinema. The choice of movie and snacks could either strengthen or weaken their bond with Gus. Here are some preferences that Gus has regarding the cinema experience:

Heart Event

At “four hearts”, players have the opportunity to visit Gus’ saloon when it’s open. It’s important to note that at this stage, Pam should also be at “two hearts” alongside the player. Gus confides that his saloon is facing financial difficulties, yet he hesitates to ask Pam to settle her bill because they share a friendly relationship.

Afterward, the player engages in a conversation with Pam in an attempt to persuade her to settle her debt. Opting for the more aggressive dialogue may provoke Gus, but selecting the softer approach could lead to Pam paying off her debt and subtly improving the friendship with Gus.

Friendship Perks

Supporters of Gus will anticipate receiving scrumptious meals delivered right to their doorstep. These treats are particularly beneficial during the initial stages of play, as players may deplete their energy rapidly. The closer a player is friends with Gus, the greater the chances he’ll extend a helping hand in keeping them well-nourished.

At certain friendship levels, Gus will even share his expert recipes with the player:

  • Salmon Dinner – Sent at three hearts. This dish restores 125 Energy and 56 Health.
  • Cranberry Sauce – Sent at seven hearts. Not only does it provide the same restorative properties as above, but it also gives +1 Mining.

When gamers accumulate five hearts with Gus, he’ll visit their farm and express that he considers them a friend. As a token of friendship, he’ll gift them a compact jukebox. This device enables players to enjoy tracks from the game’s soundtrack while they engage in farming activities on their virtual farms.
