A Stardew Valley player undertook a unique challenge: they left their Nintendo Switch running almost continuously while their in-game farmer ‘slept’ for the equivalent of 1000 years. While this was a difficult task that caused some issues with their console, it also revealed how the world of Stardew Valley evolves over a very long period.
Players of Stardew Valley often come up with unique challenges to keep the game interesting. Because there’s no true ending – you can keep playing even after achieving everything – players have lots of freedom to try different ways to play, whether they’re aiming for a perfect farm or just having fun.
Stardew Valley Farmer Sleeps for 1000 Years
A Stardew Valley player named Holozard shared screenshots on Reddit showing they managed to put their farmer to sleep for an incredible 1000 in-game years! They cleverly named their farm “Sleepwell” and their character “Sleepy.” What’s remarkable is they achieved this on the Nintendo Switch version of the game, without using any mods. It did require some effort, though. Holozard had to leave their Switch running for three weeks straight and used a controller with a turbo button to repeatedly confirm actions. They also used a hair tie to hold the control stick to the right, ensuring their farmer consistently ran to bed and fell asleep each day.
Looking at the farmer’s land, you can really see how much things can grow over a thousand in-game years. Holozard’s farm is completely covered in mushroom trees, weeds, and rocks! He’s even made almost half a million units by cutting down and selling the mushrooms. But the most amazing part – shown in the third picture – is the number of meteorites and Stone Owls scattered around. Meteorites only have a 1% chance of landing on a farm each night, and Stone Owls are even rarer at 0.5%, so seeing even one of them is unusual, making this a truly impressive sight.
I’m loving the response to this incredible challenge! Everyone’s really impressed with how the farm looks, and the jokes about the in-game time are hilarious – it’s wild to think Jas and Vincent would still be kids after a thousand years! It sounds like Holozard was happy with how things turned out, but it definitely came with some downsides. Apparently, their chickens weren’t thrilled about their owner sleeping for a millennium! And poor Holozard’s controller now has permanent stick drift. Luckily, it was a third-party controller, so hopefully it won’t be too much to fix or replace. Their Switch made it through, though it was taking forever to load things afterward.
If you’re thinking about attempting this challenge, be prepared to have your console running almost constantly. Holozard, who completed it, notes that even though the challenge lasted three weeks, the actual gameplay time was around 150 hours because the game crashed occasionally and needed to be restarted. That’s still a significant amount of time to dedicate to a single game! While Stardew Valley doesn’t usually demand a lot from your system, players should ensure their Switch has good ventilation to avoid overheating during those 150+ hours.
