I can’t believe it’s almost been 10 years since Stardew Valley came out! And people are still finding new things and having hilarious moments. I just saw a post about someone who tried to walk their male character into the women’s locker room at the Spa and got turned away – it’s so funny! Apparently, it’s happened to others before, where players realize they picked the wrong gender when they first made their character. The Stardew Valley community is always great about sharing these kinds of silly, heartwarming things, and this just made my day!
When Stardew Valley launched in 2016, players liked being able to choose whether to play as a male or female character and customize their appearance with different clothes. Since then, updates to the game have added even more ways to personalize things – from your farm and house to your character and even your pets. With all these options, it’s easy to get caught up in choosing the perfect look and accidentally start a new game with a character whose gender you didn’t intend.
What Happens if You Choose a Male Character in Stardew Valley?
A Reddit user named Top_Independence2042 shared a funny experience from the game Stardew Valley. They posted screenshots of their farmer – a character with long, auburn braided hair – being blocked from entering the women’s locker room at the Spa. One image showed the game’s message explaining why they couldn’t enter, and the second showed their character staring blankly at the screen in surprise. Top_Independence2042 hadn’t realized they’d accidentally created a male character, making the game’s reaction unexpected. They found the mistake amusing, and other players responded with similar stories about accidentally choosing the wrong gender for their farmer, and even offered advice on how to change a character’s gender in the game.
If you’re new to Stardew Valley, once you become good friends with the Wizard (reach four friendship hearts), you can access his basement and use the Shrine of Illusions. This lets you customize your character – change their name, look, favorite gift, and even gender – for just 500 gold. It takes some time to build up that friendship, but being able to alter your character and unlock new quests and story moments makes it a rewarding effort. Getting to know the other people in Pelican Town also has its perks as you become friends with them, making NPC interactions a core part of the game.

Fans of Stardew Valley were already impressed with all the game offers, so the news of another major update came as a pleasant surprise. Developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone has confirmed that Update 1.7 is coming after the popular Update 1.6, and players are eager to find out what new content it will include. While it’s not yet clear if Update 1.7 will add more ways to customize your character, many fans have requested a wider selection of clothes, hairstyles, and pronoun options. For the latest details on Update 1.7 and other projects from ConcernedApe, including Haunted Chocolatier, keep an eye out for official announcements.
