New characters who players can marry might be coming to Stardew Valley, potentially revealed in a recent interview. However, it sounds like you might have to get divorced first! While Stardew Valley is known for its farming and exploring, building relationships with the townspeople is a core part of the game, and the next update could shake things up for some of those happily married couples.
In early February, Eric Barone, the creator of Stardew Valley (known as ConcernedApe to fans), announced that the 1.7 update will add new characters you can marry. While he didn’t say who they are, it seems like there will be two of them. It’s currently unknown if these will be completely new characters, or if existing characters will simply have marriage options added to the game.
Stardew Valley’s Next Romanceable NPCs May Have Been Revealed Already
Some fans believe they’ve already solved a mystery based on comments from the game’s creator, Eric Barone. They’re predicting the ability to disrupt the marriage of Robin and Demetrius in a future update. As Reddit user xSparkyBoomManx highlighted, Barone mentioned on the TigerBelly podcast in 2025 that he originally wanted to include more romance options, including the ability to break up existing marriages and cause drama in town. He explained to host Bobby Lee that he wanted these actions to have real consequences, making players face the anger of other characters rather than just experiencing a lighthearted outcome.

A lot of players seem interested in the idea of separating the married couple, the carpenter and the scientist, who live on the mountain. Many fans have noticed that Demetrius isn’t always a supportive husband to Robin, as he often prioritizes his research and has criticized Robin’s handmade bed. Others defend Demetrius, suggesting he might be neurodivergent and that Robin doesn’t always understand his needs – for example, he once brought home tomatoes when asked for fruit. No matter how players feel about it, their marriage is one of the more difficult ones in Stardew Valley, and many are excited by the possibility of helping either Demetrius or Robin find happiness elsewhere.
As Barone noted, separating Robin and Demetrius could cause significant drama and upset several residents of Stardew Valley. They are the parents of Maru and Sebastian, and both children are potential romantic partners for the player. A breakup could strain friendships with Sam, Abigail, Harvey, and Penny, potentially turning over half of the town’s eligible singles against you. Beyond family, Robin has a regular workout group with the older women in town, and even though Demetrius keeps to himself, he seems to have a friendly relationship with his neighbor, Linus.
Even though Barone mentioned Robin and Demetrius, players shouldn’t assume they’ll be available for marriage right away. Fans are speculating that many other characters could become romance options after the 1.7 update to Stardew Valley. Popular choices include Sandy, who would need to move to town from the Calico Desert, and Clint, the blacksmith, who might finally move on from his feelings for Emily. Some players also hope to romance older characters like Lewis and Marnie, but that could mean ending their existing secret relationship.
