Starfield Reveals More Details About Free Lanes Update

Starfield is getting a big update called Free Lanes on April 7th, and Bethesda has just shared a look at what’s new. The update includes a lot of features players have asked for since the game launched in September 2023, offering fresh content to explore in this space RPG.

On March 17th, Bethesda announced both the free “Free Lanes” update and the paid “Terran Armada” expansion for Starfield. “Terran Armada” will introduce a major new robotic enemy and epic missions. The “Free Lanes” update will add new locations to planets and improve the experience of living and traveling on starships, making it feel more immersive.

Starfield Drops More Free Lanes Update Footage

With the update launching soon, Bethesda has released a new trailer giving players a first look at the upcoming “Free Lanes” feature. This addresses a common request from players who found Starfield‘s grav jump system less exciting than actually flying between planets. The trailer shows ships using a new “Cruise Mode” to travel at high speed, and players will also have an autopilot option for plotting courses. These journeys won’t be entirely peaceful, however – players may encounter “Interdictions,” which trigger ship-to-ship combat and force them to defend themselves.

Beyond improvements to how you travel between planets in Starfield, the next update will also expand activities on ships and at your outposts. A new Ship Optimization Terminal will let you fine-tune how power is distributed to key ship systems like weapons, shields, and engines, and it’s coming with a variety of new ship upgrades. The update, also known as Free Lanes, will bring improvements to bases too, including easier resource sharing with new containers, and a unique new base option: the Asteroid Manor, a luxurious orbital home.

As a huge Starfield fan, I’m so excited about the upcoming updates! It sounds like we’re getting a new resource called X-Tech, which will let us customize our best gear – and even our ships – beyond what’s currently possible. They’re adding a ton of cool new weapon skins through Free Lanes, and apparently, we might even be able to take out robots in one hit! It’s awesome that they’re bringing in collectibles like action figures – a nod to Fallout – which will give us buffs. Plus, it’ll be amazing to be able to transfer items through The Unity, making New Game Plus runs so much better!

Upcoming additions to Starfield, through the Terran Armada update, will introduce a variety of new companions, giving players more choices for crew members and base staff. While not yet confirmed for the base game, one character, Muria Siarkiewicz – known for her blunt personality during the Galbank job application – appears in the latest trailer alongside the player, discussing her previous work at a morgue. The trailer also reveals the Miniwhale, a charming, pocket-sized alien pet with eight legs, which players can adopt and who loves attention.
