As a dedicated fan of the State of Decay franchise, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of State of Decay 3 for quite some time now. The first game captured my imagination and kept me engaged for countless hours as I survived the zombie apocalypse in an open world teeming with undead threats. With the announcement of a third installment, my excitement reached new heights.

After a six-year wait since the launch of its prequel, the third installment of State of Decay, named State of Decay 3, has been officially announced, but its release date remains undisclosed. Similar to the second game in the series, State of Decay 3 is an open-world survival game set in a post-zombie apocalypse world where humanity was on the brink of extinction. Few specifics have been shared about the new game, but much like its predecessor, it will allow players to team up with three others to construct and expand their own base while battling hordes of zombies together.

While there is some resemblance between the upcoming “State of Decay 3” and its predecessor “State of Decay 2,” it would be a mistake for the new game to mimic every aspect of its prequel. Although “State of Decay 2” has eventually become popular, it didn’t start off that way. The game faced significant criticism during its early stages, which wasn’t solely due to its gameplay. Instead, it made an error that “State of Decay 3” should avoid when it makes its debut.

State of Decay 3 Needs to Perform Better Than Its Predecessor Did at Launch

State of Decay 2 Had Massive Performance Issues at Launch

At the time of its release, State of Decay 2‘s technical glitches and poor performance deterred many gamers and reviewers. Although praised for their engaging combat and varied zombie types, the survival mechanics in State of Decay 2 were deemed shallow. However, the game’s most notable strengths were marred by an abundance of bugs, particularly within its online cooperative mode. Consequently, players and critics often expressed disappointment due to the game feeling unresponsive and slow at times, reminiscent of Dragon’s Dogma‘s infamous Pawn system.

In general, State of Decay 2 was considered by many to be an unannounced early access game. A significant number of fans felt disappointed as they saw several issues recurring from the first game in the sequel. Players expressed frustration towards Undead Labs for seemingly ignoring their feedback following the release of State of Decay. Consequently, the community’s interest waned until the Juggernaut Edition was introduced in 2020. This upgrade offered an improved and mostly bug-free version of the original game to players.

State of Decay 3 Needs to Be Polished at Launch to Maintain Player Engagement

To avoid repeating past mistakes and losing player interest, it is crucial for State of Decay 3 to debut with a polished and bug-free experience. The subpar launch of State of Decay 2‘s Juggernaut Edition, even just four years ago, was met with more leniency from gamers than what is expected today. Consequently, State of Decay 3 has no other option but to launch without the hindrance of unnecessary issues like bugs and glitches.

If State of Decay 3 encounters technical issues upon release, there’s a chance for Undead Labs to publish an improved version, similar to the Juggernaut Edition of State of Decay 2, at a later date. Nonetheless, it would be preferable if State of Decay 3 debuted without significant problems. A polished launch would not only rekindle enthusiasm for the franchise but also restore confidence in Undead Labs’ ability to deliver immersive gameplay experiences alongside top-notch performance.
