The State of Decay series is famous for its thrilling zombie survival gameplay, where players explore a vast world, search for supplies, and build up a base to protect against hordes of the undead. Starting with the first game in 2013, the series became a leader in cooperative survival games, especially with the release of State of Decay 2 in 2018. Now, with this early playtest of State of Decay 3, players are finally getting a first look at the new features and gameplay mechanics coming in the full game.

State of Decay 3 Announces May 2026 Alpha Playtest Sign-Ups

  • Sign Up for the State of Decay 3 Alpha Playtest

A new trailer for State of Decay 3 revealed that a closed alpha test will begin in May 2026. Brant Fitzgerald, a co-creator of the State of Decay series, invited fans to sign up for the test and help provide feedback as the game is developed. Interested players can register on the official State of Decay website for a chance to participate.

Even if you don’t get chosen for this first playtest, signing up means you’ll be considered for future opportunities to try out State of Decay 3 and give the developers your thoughts. However, this also suggests the game won’t be released in 2026, and might not come out until 2027 or later. So, if you’re excited to play State of Decay 3 as soon as possible, signing up for the playtest is currently the best way to try and get early access.

According to Fitzgerald, the upcoming alpha playtest for State of Decay 3 in May will let players try out 4-player co-op, base building, and combat. Just like with State of Decay 2, the developers are really focused on getting feedback from players throughout the development process – they truly believe ‘Community is Survival.’ This May playtest is especially important because it will help shape the game that fans have been waiting for nearly eight years.
