Steam Deck Has Just Been Given a Feature Users Have Wanted For Years

Valve has introduced a new feature for the Steam Deck that lets you download games and updates even when the screen is turned off. This saves battery life, helps prevent screen burn-in, and makes the whole process more convenient. With the new ‘Display-Off Low-Power Mode,’ you don’t have to leave your Steam Deck on while things are installing.

We’re excited to finally deliver a feature many Steam Deck owners have requested since the device launched in 2022.

Valve Releases Display-Off Low-Power Mode for the Steam Deck

Steam Deck’s new Display-Off Low-Power Mode lets you keep downloading games and content even with the screen turned off. Once everything is downloaded, the Deck will automatically go to sleep, just like newer consoles such as the PlayStation 5.

Hi everyone! We’ve updated the Steam Deck so it can now finish downloading any active content in a low-power, screen-off mode before entering sleep. You can find more details here:

You can now quickly check your download progress on your Steam Deck by pressing a button or moving a joystick, without fully turning it on. The Deck will automatically go into full sleep mode when the battery reaches 20% unless it’s charging or connected to a dock.

How to Enable Display-Off Low-Power Mode

This new feature is currently available for users in the Beta and Preview versions of the software. Here’s how to turn it on:

  1. Go to Settings > System > System Update Channel
  2. Opt into the Beta or Preview Channel
  3. Navigate to Settings > Power to configure display-off downloads

You can also adjust the settings to control whether downloads keep going when your device is running on battery.

When Valve announced the news, fans immediately shared their excitement online. This is a significant development for the Steam Deck, especially with so many other handheld gaming devices becoming available.
