Steam recently added 10 new free-to-play games, giving players more options without spending any money. Steam is the leading platform for PC games and regularly offers free titles. This latest group is especially interesting because it includes Highguard, a well-known game that has sparked a lot of discussion.
As a PC gamer, I can tell you Steam has something for everyone. Seriously, whether you’re into small indie games or huge AAA titles, it’s all there. They’re constantly adding new stuff too – SteamDB says over 20,000 games dropped in 2025 alone! One of the biggest reasons I keep going back is the sales – you can snag games for crazy cheap. Plus, they release a ton of free-to-play games every month, which is awesome if you’re trying to save some cash.

Steam has already launched a bunch of new free-to-play games in 2026! Here are 10 you can check out now: Chicken Fren, Fortress Fury, Glassy Stare, Highguard, Knockoff, Potion Knight, SEGA Football Club Champions, Terminal Lucidity, Truckin’ It, and Where We Went. There’s a little something for everyone, from relaxing games like Chicken Fren to story-driven experiences like Glassy Stare. Keep in mind that some of these games offer optional in-app purchases, but you can enjoy them all without spending any money.
Of the free games announced, Highguard has generated the most excitement. Unveiled at The Game Awards 2025 by Wildlight Entertainment, it’s a PvP raid shooter created by developers who previously worked on popular titles like Apex Legends, Titanfall, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Highguard blends gameplay elements from various shooters, including Rainbow Six Siege and Apex Legends. Despite currently receiving “Mostly Negative” reviews on Steam, opinions are mixed, and some players believe the game is worth trying.
Steam offers a variety of free-to-play games beyond Highguard, catering to different tastes. Tower defense fans might enjoy Fortress Fury, which combines tower upgrades with roguelite elements to battle waves of enemies. If you prefer online co-op, Truckin’ It lets you and a friend compete to deliver cargo as quickly and carefully as possible. For something different, Potion Knight is a unique first-person shooter, while Terminal Lucidity and Where We Went offer puzzle gameplay. Soccer fans can try SEGA Football Club Champions, though it currently has mostly negative reviews on Steam. The good news is all these games are free to download and try!

I’m always checking for free games, and Steam isn’t the only place to find them! Epic Games is awesome because they give away freebies all the time. Right now, you can snag Rustler for free until January 29th at 11 AM EST. Then, starting after that, Definitely Not Fried Chicken will be free until February 5th. They’ve got a ton of other free games planned for the rest of the year, so it’s worth keeping an eye on their store!
It’ll be fun to discover what other free games become available on Steam in the coming months. Steam releases thousands of games, and while some will become very popular, many others could be hidden gems worth trying.
