Steam No Longer Supports Windows 7 or 8

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt and a heart full of nostalgia, I must say, Valve’s decision to bid farewell to Windows 7 and 8 on Steam has left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, I understand the necessity for security updates and modernizing the platform. However, on the other, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sadness for those who might find themselves having to upgrade their operating systems just to keep playing their favorite games.

Steam, a gaming platform developed by Valve, has rolled out a new update, marking the official phase-out of compatibility with Windows 7 and 8 operating systems.

Starting from November 5, the update to Steam now enables recording games directly within the platform. However, for users who desire to carry on using this service, they must either upgrade their operating system to Windows 10 or 11, or alternatively, opt for MacOS or Linux as an alternative to Windows.

The updated Steam client won’t work with Windows 7 or Windows 8 systems anymore. Users running these operating system versions won’t receive automatic updates for this latest version of the Steam Client.

On their FAQ about ending support, Valve explains that transitioning away from older operating systems is primarily a matter of ensuring the security of their users.

Valve stated that the update is necessary because essential Steam functions utilize an integrated version of Google Chrome, which is no longer compatible with older versions of Windows. Moreover, they mentioned that upcoming iterations of Steam will demand Windows 10 or later for the necessary feature and security updates.

They went on to say: “Computers using these operating systems, when linked to the internet, may become vulnerable to fresh malware and other threats that won’t receive updates. This malware could lead to your PC, Steam platform, and games running slowly or crashing. Furthermore, this malware can be used to swipe your Steam account credentials or those of other services.

It’s also worth noting that Steam will also no longer work on MacOS 10.13 or 10.14.
