On the 28th of January, I was thrilled to find that Steam had rolled out an update for us users to download. This update aimed to rectify some glitches that could pop up when reconnecting to the service or using specific features in Big Picture Mode. Notably, this update followed closely on the heels of a larger overhaul by Valve, which revamped the layout of the download and installation progress bars within the user interface.
For more than two decades, Valve, a prominent digital distributor of PC games, regularly rolls out updates for the Steam desktop client to introduce fresh features. One such update in 2024 was made in response to user concerns about privacy. This update enabled users to mark certain Steam games as private, thereby concealing their ownership and gaming activities from their friends. Moreover, these updates aim to enhance performance on both regular PCs and the Steam Deck. They are designed to rectify issues when client functions fail to operate as expected or if specific controllers don’t function properly in certain games.
In just a few days following the significant Steam client overhaul that modified how download and installation progress bars looked, Valve rolled out a minor update for PC users to acquire. This latest Steam client update, deployed on January 28 at 2:37 PM Eastern, needs around 57 MB of available storage space for downloading and installing. This modest update incorporated several general fixes and addressed certain problems related to Big Picture Mode and Steam Input.
Prior to the update for clients on January 28th, some users encountered issues where the L3 and R3 buttons failed to function on certain devices, such as fight sticks and controllers without analog axis capabilities. Besides the automatic updates, users can also manually check for Steam client updates by clicking on the Steam logo located at the top left corner of the screen and selecting the appropriate drop-down menu option. After making this selection, users need to restart Steam to complete the update installation process.
2025 saw a bustling beginning for Valve, with the latest Steam update arriving amidst the hustle and bustle. While the Steam Deck remains an essential and mobile choice for gamers to enjoy their preferred PC games, Valve made a significant announcement at CES 2025 – Lenovo’s upcoming Legion Go S handheld device will feature a SteamOS model. This makes it the first non-Valve product to incorporate its operating system. The SteamOS variant of the Legion Go S is set for release in May 2025, starting at $499.
As a dedicated gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the continued success stories like the resurgence of the iconic game, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, on Steam. The PC gaming realm seems to be in a perpetual state of growth, and it’s exciting to ponder what groundbreaking features Valve might have up their sleeve for future updates to the Steam client.
