Steam User Reunited With Old Account After 18 Years

18 years later, a user on Steam had their long-lost account restored following a hack where a cybercriminal seized control over the email linked to the account. The individual who managed to regain access to their account dating back almost two decades found that one game associated with it was last played in 2009, demonstrating the age of the account.

Ever since it debuted in 2003, Steam has grown into the most significant digital distribution platform for PC gaming. Regular updates are rolled out for both desktop and mobile versions of Steam, which address bugs and introduce new customizable features. In a recent beta update to the Steam Client in August, Valve enabled users to rename games within their Steam Libraries and modify cover art as desired. Additionally, they can arrange these games according to specific criteria. The Steam Client Beta is now open for all users who wish to participate, test its functions, and share feedback with Valve before the official launch.

Steam User Recovers Old Account After 18 Years

After a few years, a user named Influence_X on Reddit narrated their story about regaining access to a lost Steam account. It appears that a Russian hacker managed to breach an old Microsoft Hotmail email account and attempted to gain control over a forgotten Steam account. Although Valve is known for helping recover compromised Steam accounts, Influence_X mentioned in a subsequent comment that the hacker did not succeed beyond the account recovery email stage and instead attempted to forcefully break into their Steam account. The user became aware of the security intrusion when they received a notification in their Gmail inbox.

The last action recorded on this account was approximately 13 years ago, and since then, only two games have been associated with it. One of these games, “Dark Messiah of Might & Magic” from 2006, appears in the account’s recent activity feed, although it hasn’t been played since December 2009. This action RPG currently boasts an impressive 89% positive rating on Steam and is now available for $2.49, which represents a significant 75% discount from its original price of $9.99.

After recovering their Steam account, Influence_X stated they updated the passwords and login details for both their Hotmail email and their 18-year-old Steam account. As Valve continues to strengthen Steam’s security, it will be interesting to see what steps they take to protect their users from potential cyber threats in the future.
