Steam Users Have 4 Free Games to Play for January 2026

Okay, so Steam is letting us try out four new games to kick off the year, which is awesome! Seriously, Steam has tons of games – it’s probably the biggest online game store out there. You can find everything, from huge titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Battlefield 6, to all these cool indie games. And the best part? They always have a bunch of games you can play without even spending any money. It’s a great way to discover something new!

Steam offers a wide variety of free-to-play games, including online titles and independent creations. You can find popular free-to-play MMORPGs like Guild Wars 2 and Lost Ark there, and Steam frequently gives away free games during sales, helping indie developers reach new audiences. To start 2026, Steam is letting players grab four different games completely free.

Steam is Giving Away 4 Free Games

Steam is currently offering four recently released games as free downloads. Players can add the roguelike RPG TOREROWA, the deck builder Cybersoul, the card game Land Run, and the top-down shooter Herofrenia Infinite Hyperdeath to their Steam libraries without paying anything. Herofrenia and Land Run mark the first releases for their respective developers, while the developer of Cybersoul has created a few other deck-building games. TOREROWA‘s developer, Asobimo, is perhaps the most well-known of the four, having previously developed the mobile MMORPG Sword Art Online: Integral Factor based on the popular anime series. Importantly, none of these four games have a specified end date for their free availability, suggesting they will remain free-to-play.

Okay, so the free games aren’t exactly AAA titles, but there’s a surprisingly good mix of genres to choose from. I checked out TOREROWA and it’s cool – you can team up with friends, up to three of us, and either fight monsters together or go head-to-head in PvP within these roguelike dungeons. We were grabbing loot and having a blast. Just a heads-up about Herofrenia Infinite Hyperdeath though – it’s entirely in Brazilian Portuguese right now, so unless you speak the language, you might be a little lost. It’s good to know all these games are pretty new to Steam, they all came out right before Christmas!

Steam Has Become a Hub for Indie Developers

Steam is becoming an increasingly popular place for independent game developers to release their games, with more and more choosing the platform every month. It’s been the launchpad for huge indie successes like Hades and Stardew Valley, and recently, an indie game – Hollow Knight: Silksong – even won Steam’s top award at the Steam Awards. Other indie titles also recognized at the event included PEAK, Hades 2, and RV There Yet?.

2025 was a fantastic year for independent games. Beyond the Steam Awards, the popular indie RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won the prestigious “Game of the Year” award at The Game Awards. Other highly-rated indie titles like Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades 2 were also nominated, and games such as Ball x Pit and Blue Prince received recognition as well. The indie gaming community is thriving and continues to grow, with Steam remaining a go-to platform for discovering new and exciting developers.
