A call for action to prevent censorship on the platform known as Steam is picking up steam following a movement led by passionate users, who are displeased with recent adjustments in the guidelines. On July 16, Steam made changes to its publisher regulations, incorporating a novel term that allows certain external entities to monitor and control the content distributed on their platform.
Starting July 16th, I’ve noticed a change in Steam’s policies: game publishers are urged to steer clear of titles that could potentially breach the terms of our payment processors like MasterCard, Visa, or PayPal. Essentially, they’re asking us developers to not only adhere to their platform’s rules but also be open to scrutiny from these companies.
Due to the recent changes in Steam’s policies, numerous games have been taken down, leaving many players displeased. In reaction to what some consider censorship, supporters have started a petition on Change.org asking Valve to reconsider their decisions. As we speak, this petition has amassed more than 10,000 signatures and lays out four main requests:
1) The halt of censorship for legally produced adult-oriented content.
2) The preservation of creators’ freedom to showcase their creativity without restriction.
3) Greater openness from marketplaces about their limitations.
4) Minimizing the impact of activist organizations on gaming platforms.
The Anti-Censorship Steam Petition Targets Collective Shout
One of the requests made in the petition seems to be targeting Collective Shout, a non-profit group credited for influencing Steam’s recent policy shift regarding adult-only games. Shortly after Steam withdrew several mature titles, Collective Shout’s co-founder, Melinda Tankard Reist, commented on the situation via Twitter. She suggested that the censorship was a result of their allegations about Steam’s payment processors earning profits from graphic sexual content. Declaring it a significant triumph, she stated that Collective Shout is pleased with the updated terms and conditions.
Reist has stated that members of the organization are experiencing a flood of harassment. She explained that numerous Australian women who are part of the campaign have been subjected to bullying, threats, and online harassment from gamers who disagree with Steam’s new policies. It is uncertain if the onslaught of online abuse originated from the anti-censorship petition. However, it is noteworthy that Reist’s Twitter thread was posted only two days after the petition explicitly criticized Collective Shout for its position against specific video games.
Currently, many significant video game marketplaces are tightening their regulations against sexually explicit games and other potentially contentious material. For instance, Nintendo has revised its policies to block inappropriate or spammy titles. Similarly, PlayStation seems to be addressing AI-generated offensive content and specific types of adult content, suggesting that Steam may not reverse its current stance. The future impact of the recent petition on Valve’s approach towards mature content remains uncertain.
