Steam’s Upcoming ‘Realistic Minecraft’ Game May Have to Walk on Eggshells

It’s fair to say that Minecraft has achieved remarkable popularity; not only does it dominate the modern survival-crafting genre, but it also set numerous trends in this field and beyond. Consequently, it’s no wonder that numerous games resembling Minecraft have emerged over time, with both large and small developers trying their hand at creating a similar procedurally generated experience to tap into the success of Minecraft’s creator, Notch.

Indeed, many of these clones face challenges in matching the fame of their originals. For every gem like ‘Dragon Quest Builders’, there are numerous projects imitating ‘Minecraft’s’ intricate mechanics or even misinterpreting them altogether. The upcoming indie game ‘Everwind’, however, aspires to steer clear of such pitfalls, offering something fresh while bearing a striking resemblance to ‘Minecraft’ at first glance. The most evident divergence between ‘Everwind’ and ‘Minecraft’ lies in their visual aesthetics. Much like its inspiration, ‘Everwind’ utilizes voxel-based graphics, but with improved textures, enhanced visual effects, and other design elements that lend it a more realistic feel amidst its overall simplistic design. Unfortunately, this may not be the standout feature ‘Everwind’ requires.

Everwind’s Art Style Is Echoed by Minecraft’s Vibrant Visuals Feature

Vibrant Visuals Make Minecraft More Realistic—Much Like Everwind Is Attempting to Do

The Vibrant Visuals feature of Minecraft, which continues to be refined by Mojang, aims at improving the gaming experience with several graphic enhancements. These improvements encompass:

  • Directional lighting
  • Volumetric fog
  • Subsurface scattering

In contemporary gaming, whether AAA or indie, eye-catching graphical elements are increasingly prevalent, often seen in games that strive for lifelike visuals. However, Minecraft stands out as it doesn’t aim for realism. The Vibrant Visuals mod brings a remarkable and distinct change, contrasting the basic graphics with a sense of authenticity. Essentially, Everwind aims to achieve the same thing: applying modern visual enhancements to a world reminiscent of Minecraft.

Mods Can Make Minecraft Even More True-to-Life

Despite Vibrant Visuals not being fully optimized yet, Minecraft players can still experience enhanced visual realism thanks to mods. In fact, the Minecraft modding community has a reputation for delivering more visually appealing graphics from this well-known title. Mods such as MakeUp and Bliss Shaders can significantly improve the appearance of Minecraft, making it resemble the game with Vibrant Visuals enabled, so these aesthetic enhancements are nothing novel within the game’s community.

Essentially, what I’m trying to convey is that the unique selling point of Everwind, its visual style, may not seem all that novel to Minecraft enthusiasts. In fact, it could be argued that Everwind’s attempt at combining realism with voxel art is somewhat overshadowed by Minecraft’s previous exploration in this area.

Everwind’s Differences Have to Be More Than Skin-Deep

While Everwind being described as “realistic Minecraft” might not be an appealing comparison, it doesn’t necessarily mean disaster for this up-and-coming indie. However, if Everwind’s main selling point is just its unique art style, it could face tough competition even if Minecraft didn’t have the same level of realism. In fact, there are numerous Minecraft clones out there, and many of them have only offered cosmetic differences from the original.

People don’t play Minecraft because of its high-end visuals; they are drawn in by the engaging, creative gameplay set in a lovable world. The Steam page for Everwind hints at some interesting features like a detailed base-building system and stronger RPG elements. These aspects might make it more attractive compared to Everwind’s graphics which are described as realistic, so perhaps these mechanics will be its main selling points rather than the visual appeal. Essentially, the competition for Minecraft players will mostly revolve around mechanics instead of aesthetics.
