Steel Ball Run: 11 Strongest Close-Range Stands, Ranked

The popular anime series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has returned with Steel Ball Run now streaming on Netflix. This new installment features Johnny Joestar, a character who uses a wheelchair, and kicks off the epic Steel Ball Run race, starting in San Diego, California, and ending in New York City. The first episode is available now.

The Steel Ball Run race attracts thousands of competitors, all with unique motivations – some seek recognition, others prize money, and a few even hunt for bizarre relics. To succeed in this dangerous race from the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series, most racers, including Johnny Joestar, need to use their Stands – powerful manifestations of their fighting spirit – to overcome their rivals. Here are some of the most formidable Stands when it comes to fighting up close.

Tomb of the Boom

Stand Users: Boomboom Family

The Tomb of the Boom is a Stand used by the Boomboom family, who attacked Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar during the second stage of the Steel Ball Run race. If someone comes into contact with the Boomboom family’s blood, they become a magnet, drawing in all nearby iron – even iron within the sand and their own blood.

Benjamin, the leader of the Boomboom family, has the unique ability to camouflage himself by controlling iron within his own skin. His brother, Andre, can create iron weapons that emerge from inside a person’s body. Meanwhile, L.A. Boomboom specializes in completely paralyzing his enemies.

In a Silent Way

Stand User: Sandman

Sandman introduced the first Stand in the Steel Ball Run race. He’s a member of a Native American tribe who runs across America to gather pieces of a holy saint’s remains. His goal is to use these relics to get back land that was taken from his family.

Sandman’s power, demonstrated in In a Silent Way, lets him transform sounds into solid objects, such as blocks with Japanese characters, for protection. He can also store sounds within these objects and then unleash them as attacks from afar.

Boku no Rhythm wo Kiitekure

Stand User: Oyecomova

Oyecomova, being a bomb specialist, perfectly embodies his Stand, Boku no Rhythm wo Kiitekure. This Stand grants him the ability to craft bombs and attach them to anything. Once placed, he simply waits for the timers on small stopwatches to count down, triggering a powerful explosion.

I’m absolutely fascinated by Oyecomova’s abilities! He can just make as many bombs as he needs, and it’s not just about having them – he’s incredibly clever about how he uses them. He can stick them to anything, even really unexpected things like puddles, smoke, or, get this, a swarm of bees! It’s a really unique way to spread an explosion, and it makes him a seriously unpredictable opponent.

Catch the Rainbow

Stand User: Blackmore

Blackmore’s Stand is unfortunately limited – it only works when it’s raining. When the sun is shining, Blackmore can’t use his Stand and has to depend on his skills as an assassin.

When it starts to rain, Blackmore gains a significant advantage, easily overpowering his enemies. His ability, Catch the Rainbow, lets him control the rain, freezing drops to use as deadly projectiles and even teleport through it to keep track of his opponents. He can also walk on the raindrops themselves and use them to heal his injuries.

Cream Starter

Stand User: Hot Pants

Hot Pants’ Stand, Cream Starter, is unique because anyone can use it – you don’t need to be a Stand user yourself. It works no matter how far away you are, or even across different dimensions. If the user has the spray canisters, they can use Cream Starter to create copies of flesh, take flesh from others, and spray it at their opponents.

Users can sometimes extend their bodies – or just pieces of them – using their Stand, allowing them to control these extensions remotely. Hot Pants often uses Cream Starter to overwhelm enemies by suffocating and blinding them with a fleshy liquid, as well as to heal injuries and change her appearance.

Mandom

Stand User: Ringo Roadagain

Similar to The World, Mandom is a Stand ability that lets Ringo rewind time. He typically rewinds by six seconds, but this is a limit he places on himself to ensure his fights are fair.

When time is reversed, people remember the last six seconds as if they happened, which can be disorienting and make it hard to understand what’s real, particularly if they don’t realize what caused the change. Ringo uses this ability to avoid surprise attacks and unfair fights by essentially undoing them before they land.

Scary Monsters

Stand User: Diego Brando

I’ve been watching Diego Brando in Steel Ball Run, and his Stand, Scary Monsters, is really something. It lets him completely transform – usually into a dinosaur, but sometimes a terrifying mix of human and dinosaur. When he does, it’s like his senses sharpen, and he gets a huge increase in strength, speed, and how quickly he can react. It’s a pretty incredible ability to witness.

Diego has a dangerous ability: he can infect others, turning them into either fossils or dinosaurs under his control. He’s even capable of building a whole dinosaur army. He can also alter the physical form of his own horse, changing its body parts at will.

Ball Breaker

Stand User: Gyro Zeppeli

Gyro Zeppeli’s Stand, Ball Breaker, is tiny but incredibly dangerous. About the size of a small person—or Gyro’s steel balls—it causes rapid aging to any part of a Stand user—or their Stand—that it touches, aging them drastically in seconds.

The Golden Spin attack from Ball Breaker is powerful enough to overcome the limits of time and space, demonstrated by its ability to penetrate the dimensional barrier created by Funny Valentine’s D4C Love Train.

The World

Stand User: Parallel World Diego Brando

The World, a powerful Stand, is introduced in Steel Ball Run when Funny Valentine tries one final time to defeat Johnny Joestar. This version of The World belongs to a different Diego Brando and, like others of its kind, can stop time. It uses this ability to create dangerous traps for Johnny, all within a five-second window.

The World’s Stand ability creates instant, deadly traps, like surrounding opponents with knives, tripwires, or even flammable liquids and fire. Beyond these quick attacks, The World remains incredibly strong in close combat and can still defeat enemies with a single, powerful punch.

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (D4C)

Stand User: Funny Valentine

Thanks to his ability, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Funny Valentine can move between dimensions endlessly. He only needs to fit between two objects to travel. This allows him to meet alternate versions of himself, pull them into his own world, and even use them as stand-ins to avoid fatal injuries.

Funny Valentine’s ability works by pulling alternate versions of his opponents into this world. This creates a powerful gravitational force that draws the alternate and real versions of the victim together. When they touch, both versions are completely destroyed, effectively erasing them from existence.

The Stand excels at fighting up close, but even with its impressive strength and speed, it isn’t powerful enough to defeat Johnny Joestar when he’s using Tusk Act IV.
