Stephen Colbert Co-Writing New Lord of the Rings Film

Exciting news for fans of Middle-earth! Warner Bros. has confirmed that Stephen Colbert is helping to write a new Lord of the Rings movie. Tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, the film will be a collaborative effort between Colbert, his son Peter McGee (who is a screenwriter), and Philippa Boyens, a key writer on the previous films.

I was so excited to hear the news through a video from director Peter Jackson – he’s the one who first introduced so many of us to Tolkien’s world with the original movies! Stephen Colbert, who’s a huge Tolkien fan like me, shared that this new film is actually based on parts of The Fellowship of the Ring that didn’t make it into the 2001 movie. It’s amazing to think there was more of the story to tell, and now we’re finally going to see it!

Colbert explains the movie’s story is based on the beginning of the book, particularly chapters three through the sections about the Barrow-downs. It’s set many years after the original films, with the story jumping forward fourteen years after Frodo leaves the Shire. We’ll follow Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit their old adventures, while Sam’s daughter, Elanor, discovers a secret connected to the war with Sauron.

Colbert explained the idea evolved over several years, starting with conversations with his son and eventually leading to collaborations with Jackson and Boyens. They’ve been working on developing the story for the past two years.

The Lord of the Rings Franchise is Growing in a New Direction

This fantasy series continues to be incredibly popular and influential, and this new project shows how it’s still growing and changing. Starting with the original films released between 2001 and 2003, the series has had a huge impact on culture, winning praise from critics and numerous awards, including 11 Academy Awards – a record shared by only one other film – for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

What sets Shadow of the Past apart is its unique approach. Instead of simply repeating well-known stories, the film delves into unexplored areas of Tolkien’s world while still feeling connected to the existing movies. Successfully balancing faithfulness to the original books with the style of the films will likely be a key factor in how viewers receive it.

Stephen Colbert’s participation makes the project even more exciting. He’s famous for his TV work, but he’s also a longtime Tolkien enthusiast. Working with Boyens and Jackson means they’re combining a passionate fan’s viewpoint with proven storytelling skills.

Okay, so this latest installment feels like a real departure for the series. It’s stepping away from those huge battles and epic quests we’re used to, and instead, diving deep into the personal stories of characters and the history of Middle-earth itself. It’s less about saving the world and more about understanding its past and the people who shaped it, which honestly, feels like a refreshing way to look at a world we thought we already knew.

The Hunt for Gollum Sets the Stage for the Next Phase of Middle-earth Movies

Following the currently-in-development film The Hunt for Gollum, another project, Shadow of the Past, is planned. The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis, is set to be released on December 17, 2027.

This story is set after the events of The Hobbit but before The Lord of the Rings. It follows Aragorn and Gandalf as they hunt for Gollum, hoping to learn more about the One Ring. Andy Serkis will once again play Gollum, and Ian McKellen is likely to return as Gandalf. Elijah Wood has suggested he might also appear as Frodo.

As a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, I’m really excited about this new movie focusing on Gollum. It feels like it’s going to connect everything we’ve already seen, diving deeper into a part of his story that was only hinted at before. It seems like the filmmakers are planning to explore more of Middle-earth’s past, showing us familiar events through fresh eyes – and I’m totally here for that!

Both The Hunt for Gollum and Shadow of the Past suggest the filmmakers are now prioritizing stories that connect and build upon each other. Instead of being standalone films, these movies seem intended to create a more ongoing and connected experience within Tolkien’s world.

As a huge fan of Middle-earth, I’m really excited about Shadow of the Past! While we don’t have all the details on who’s acting or directing yet, it’s clear they’re building on the world we already love. It sounds like they’re revisiting familiar stories but also adding some new threads to the narrative, which is awesome – a mix of old favorites and fresh ideas with both returning and new talent involved.
