As a seasoned gamer of horror stories, having traversed the terrifying landscapes of countless novels and films, I can confidently say that the upcoming Carrie TV series on Amazon Prime Video has me both excited and apprehensive.
Stephen King’s renowned work, titled “Carrie“, falls under the genre of terrifying literature. Currently, the creator of “The Haunting of Hill House”, Mike Flanagan, is planning to reimagine this chilling tale for a TV series on Amazon.
As a devoted reader, I’d say my first encounter with King was through his groundbreaking debut novel, “Carrie.” This book catapulted him into the limelight as a horror writing virtuoso. The story revolves around Carrie White, a typical high school girl, but with an extraordinary secret – she possesses telekinetic abilities. Unfortunately, Carrie’s life is far from ordinary; she endures both physical and emotional torment at home by her religious mother and at school due to the cruelty of her peers. A cruel prank at the prom, intended to humiliate her, triggers a chilling chain of events as Carrie, in a fit of rage and desperation, unleashes her powers on the town in retaliation.
According to Deadline, Flanagan and King are joining forces once more for an 8-episode adaptation of ‘Carrie,’ with Flanagan taking on the roles of writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Trevor Macy from Intrepid Pictures will also executive produce, while Melinda Nishioka will oversee the project on their end. Notably, Flanagan and Intrepid have an ongoing partnership with Amazon MGM Studios. If the ‘Carrie’ series gets greenlit, it is expected to air on Amazon Prime Video. The series’ synopsis goes:
Carrie is a modern retelling of the tale about Carrie White, a socially awkward high school student who has lived in isolation under her overbearing mother’s control. After the unexpected and unfortunate death of her father, Carrie must navigate the unfamiliar world of public education, endure a bullying incident that rocks her community, and discover the emergence of extraordinary psychokinetic abilities.
The novel ‘Carrie’ by King has been brought to the big screen on three different occasions. One of the most well-known adaptations is the 1976 movie directed by Brian De Palma, starring Sissy Spacek as Carrie. This film was a significant commercial success and is still considered one of the greatest horror movies ever made. A sequel titled ‘The Rage: Carrie 2’ came out about two decades later, though it initially had no connection to De Palma’s movie until it was rewritten as a direct continuation of the 1976 original. Unfortunately, this film failed at the box office and received negative reviews. A television film adaptation in 2002 also received poor criticism, but it was a success for NBC in terms of ratings. In 2013, Sony Pictures released another remake featuring ChloĆ« Grace Moretz as Carrie, which received mixed reviews and moderate box office returns.
It’s worth noting that previous adaptations of Carrie, aside from De Palma’s film, have not seemed to captivate audiences. Yet, there’s excitement surrounding Flanagan’s take on the story. Flanagan is well-known for his prowess in horror writing and directing, with Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House being a popular choice for Halloween viewing. He has previously adapted other authors’ works, such as King’s stories, with Netflix’s Gerald’s Game and Warner Bros.’ Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining. His latest adaptation of King’s work, The Life of Chuck, premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and is set for a wide release in the summer of 2025.
King is well-known for disliking numerous interpretations of his work, with Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” being perhaps the most notorious example. Therefore, his frequent collaborations with Flanagan might suggest that he trusts the director’s talent to accurately adapt “Carrie.
Nonetheless, De Palma’s film certainly set a challenging hurdle for Flanagan, yet it seems that Flanagan could be the appropriate candidate to leap over it.
Carrie is in development at Amazon MGM Studios.
