Legendary horror writer Stephen King has often left a unique touch on various TV shows and movies during his over-50-year career by making cameo appearances. These appearances, particularly in adaptations of his own works, have been eagerly anticipated by fans. However, it appears that these delightful surprises may be nearing their end for fans who were excited to see King in MGM+’s “The Institute” series.
Stephen King has made appearances in various projects inspired by his own works over the years, such as “Storm of the Century,” “Creepshow 2,” “Kingdom Hospital,” “The Shining,” and numerous others. Interestingly, he also popped up in productions where he wasn’t directly involved. King’s acting career started with a minor role in the 1981 film “Knightriders” by George A. Romero, where he played “Hoagie Man.” After that, he continued to make cameos in shows like “Frasier,” “Sons of Anarchy,” “The Simpsons,” and the romantic comedy movie “Fever Pitch” from 2005. One of his most successful adaptations was in “It Chapter 2,” but despite his concerns about being a bad luck charm, he eventually agreed to participate as a pawn shop owner, with director Andy Muschietti also appearing in the film.
Stephen King’s Binned Cameo in The Institute Could Be the End of His Iconic Appearances

In 2019, Stephen King had been planned to appear in his own TV adaptation of “The Institute”, but due to ongoing health issues with his back, he was unable to travel to Nova Scotia, Canada, for filming. During a virtual press day interview, Jack Bender and Benjamin Cavell, the show’s directors, revealed that King was offered a role as The Lisping Man in the series. However, King felt it would be a misstep to cast him in “The Institute” TV series.
He has concerns that it could be a distraction, and I agree. At one point, there was an idea – I can’t recall who proposed it – but the idea was floated at some stage that he might portray The Lisping Man. However, before anyone else, he expressed his view that this would be a mistake. He stated, “I believe it’s a bad decision.” He suggested that an actor should be cast instead.
For those who have enjoyed tracking Stephen King’s appearances throughout his career, finding him has always been an exciting moment. Yet, it’s surprising to learn that he believes his presence could ruin the experience, contradicting the opinions of his devoted fans. However, considering that King turns 78 this September and has been battling severe back pain since a car accident in 1999, which led to multiple surgeries, health complications including pneumonia, it seems fair to assume that King’s active lifestyle may now be drawing to a close.
Fans love catching glimpses of Stephen King during his career appearances. But contrary to his fans’ views, he thinks being there might spoil the fun. Given that King is 78 this year and has struggled with back pain since 1999, it seems likely that his active lifestyle may be ending.
In his statements, Cavell disclosed that they have a highly skilled actor lined up to portray The Lisping Man, and acknowledged that the character carries too much narrative significance to be played by King himself. However, they’ve left room for King to potentially join season 2 of The Institute, should he choose to do so. For now, it seems King won’t make any cameos in the near future or possibly ever, instead focusing on writing and recording upcoming fairytale audiobooks. Regardless, the devoted fan base of King will persist in their admiration and reverence for one of the world’s most renowned horror authors.
The Institute Season one premiered on MGM+ on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
