Stranger Than Heaven From Yakuza Studio Features 5 Cities Across 5 Different Eras

A new trailer for Stranger Than Heaven reveals players will be able to explore five different cities, each set in a unique time period. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio also announced they’ll be holding another presentation soon with a detailed look at many features of the game.

Originally unveiled as Project Century at The Game Awards 2024, the game was officially titled Stranger Than Heaven at Summer Game Fest in June 2025. The developers at RGG Studio have consistently presented it as a sweeping cinematic crime drama set over many years, but have been careful not to reveal too much. A key mystery has been whether Stranger Than Heaven takes place in the same world as their popular Yakuza series, but recent hints suggest that it very well might.

Stranger Than Heaven Gets an Action-Packed ‘5 Eras’ Trailer

A new trailer for Stranger Than Heaven shown at the Xbox Partner Preview event on March 26th revealed the game will feature five cities across five different time periods. This makes the game even bigger than originally planned, as the developers previously only mentioned three eras. The trailer specifically details the years the story will cover: 1915, 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965. Though the game might touch on other years, they won’t be major parts of the gameplay.

The latest trailer focuses on Mako Daito, an enigmatic character shown aging throughout different time periods. He’s likely to be the central character of Stranger Than Heaven, though the game’s 50-year story suggests there will be other important characters. The trailer also shows the return of familiar cities Kamurocho and Sotenbori, leading fans to believe Stranger Than Heaven is connected to the Yakuza series – potentially as a prequel exploring the origins of the Tojo Clan. The game’s story seems to take place just before the clan became powerful, a period that hasn’t been specifically dated in the series’ history but is believed to be in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

Recent gameplay footage hints that Stranger Than Heaven will play much like the newer Like a Dragon games, with a complex fighting system that includes grappling, a variety of weapons, and the ability to use the surrounding environment to your advantage. RGG Studio’s Masayoshi Yokoyama stated that the trailer only showed a small part of what the combat will offer. The studio plans to reveal more details during a special presentation on May 6th at 4 p.m. Pacific Time / 7 p.m. Eastern Time.

With five confirmed cities, Stranger Than Heaven will be the most expansive game in the Yakuza series since Yakuza 5. The latest trailer shows familiar elements for Like a Dragon fans, such as dining, smoking, and mini-games – including a new arm wrestling feature. Like previous games, Stranger Than Heaven will have an original soundtrack, this time heavily inspired by Japanese jazz from different periods. The game also continues the tradition of celebrity appearances, with the trailer revealing Snoop Dogg’s involvement – something the developers hinted at back in December 2024.

The game doesn’t have a firm release date yet, with the recent trailer only saying it’s “coming soon.” However, with a showcase planned for early May, it’s likely Stranger Than Heaven will be released around the end of 2026.
