Stranger Than Heaven Really Wants You to Think It’s Not a Like a Dragon Game

So, after getting hooked on Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties earlier this year, I’m super excited about RGG Studio’s new game, Stranger Than Heaven. We’re still waiting for Like a Dragon 9, but this looks like it’ll scratch that itch in the meantime. It’s promising all the things I love about their games – a gripping crime story and seriously satisfying brawls. But here’s the interesting part: it seems like Stranger Than Heaven might actually be connected to the Like a Dragon universe, potentially becoming a really important part of it all. I’m definitely keeping an eye on this one!

Details about Stranger Than Heaven have been scarce since it was first announced as “Project Century” at The Game Awards 2024, with RGG and Sega releasing updates slowly. A recent trailer shown at the Xbox Partner Preview revealed the five different time periods and cities players will explore. This trailer strongly suggests that Stranger Than Heaven is actually a Like a Dragon game presented as a brand new franchise.

Stranger Than Heaven is getting a deeper dive in a dedicated broadcast coming May 6.

Stranger Than Heaven is a Like a Dragon Game in All But Name

While Sega and RGG Studio haven’t officially said so, it’s becoming clear that Stranger Than Heaven is strongly connected to the Like a Dragon series. Though it doesn’t share the Like a Dragon title or feature familiar characters like Kazuma Kiryu, Goro Majima, or Ichiban Kasuga, the game has many of the same qualities. Its tough fighting and realistic portrayal of Japan’s criminal underworld across five different time periods make the main character, Mako Daito, feel like a natural fit within the Like a Dragon universe, and the connection appears to be even more significant than just surface-level similarities.

Stranger Than Heaven Basically Confirms That It’s Set in the Like a Dragon Universe

The newest trailer for Stranger Than Heaven showed that the game will be set in five distinct cities, each representing a different time period. These periods are:

  • 1915
  • 1929
  • 1943 — Sotenbori
  • 1951
  • 1965 — Kamurocho

Two of the game’s five cities have been revealed, and they strongly link it to the Like a Dragon universe. The 1943 section of the game will take place in Sotenbori, Osaka – a fictionalized version of Dotonbori that fans will recognize from games like Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami 2, and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. The final era, set in 1965, is confirmed to take place in Kamurocho, the iconic fictionalized version of Kabukicho, Tokyo, which is a central location in most Like a Dragon games.

While the developers haven’t revealed all the locations in Stranger Than Heaven, the latest trailer gives us some clues. Fans believe the 1915 setting will be somewhere in Yokohama, possibly a familiar area like Ijincho from Yakuza: Like a Dragon, or maybe a new city like Kitakyushu, which has a history with the yakuza. The 1929 location appears to be a cold, northern area, likely in Hokkaido, perhaps a place like Tsukimino in Sapporo, as seen in Yakuza 5. The 1951 setting is harder to pinpoint, but some players think it could be located in Japan’s Gunma prefecture.

Stranger Than Heaven Isn’t the First Non-LaD Game Set in the Same Universe

The world of Like a Dragon has grown beyond its main games, with the Judgment series successfully broadening the scope beyond the yakuza and the Tojo Clan. These games, set in familiar locations like Kamurocho and Ijincho, still feel connected to the original series. Now, Stranger Than Heaven appears to be intentionally building on this shared universe with locations like Sotenbori and Kamurocho, even though it’s not a Like a Dragon game directly. It’s likely we’ll see other locations from past Like a Dragon games appear in future eras as well.

How Stranger Than Heaven Might Connect to the Broader Like a Dragon Franchise

If the game Stranger Than Heaven is connected to the Like a Dragon series, there’s likely a specific reason why that connection hasn’t been made clear. A popular theory suggests Stranger Than Heaven will tell the story of how the Tojo Clan was originally formed. While the Like a Dragon games haven’t explored the Tojo Clan’s beginnings, the 1965 setting of Stranger Than Heaven aligns with the time Makoto Tojo would have established the clan, based on the known lineage of its leaders.

There’s a chance the film Stranger Than Heaven might show us the origins of the Daidoji Faction. Since the faction was formed after World War II, and the film takes place in 1951 and 1965, we could see Minoru Daidoji, the faction’s founder, appear. Maybe Mako Daito gets involved in a financial scandal involving Minoru’s misuse of military funds and becomes one of the first people working for the Daidoji Faction.

No matter how Stranger Than Heaven ties into the Like a Dragon series, it’s becoming increasingly clear that this game will be a major turning point for the entire Like a Dragon universe. As we learn more about the story, the connections between the two games will probably become even more apparent.
