Stranger Things is Officially Crossing Over with a Totally Unexpected Game

A surprise Stranger Things update has arrived in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024! Players can now complete helicopter missions flying over Hawkins, Indiana – the iconic town from the popular Netflix show. As fans wait for the final season of Stranger Things to be released, they can pass the time by exploring the area above the mysterious Upside Down in the game.

The latest season of Stranger Things began streaming on Netflix on November 26th, but only the first four episodes are currently available. The remaining episodes will be released in two parts: one on Christmas Day and the final episodes almost a week later on New Year’s Eve. While fans wait, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is offering a special experience, allowing them to virtually explore iconic locations from the show.

A free update just dropped for the game, adding five rescue missions themed around Stranger Things! Players can now explore a detailed recreation of Hawkins, featuring over 40 iconic locations from the show. Fans will recognize places like Hawkins Lab, the middle and high schools, Starcourt Mall, Family Video, Palace Arcade, and Lovers Lake – all bringing back memories from favorite seasons of Stranger Things.

The new update for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 allows players to step out of their planes, and this crossover with Stranger Things will let fans explore the town of Hawkins—but it won’t be entirely peaceful. The official trailer highlights iconic locations and a detailed Bell UH-1H Huey helicopter, but also hints at danger. We see cracks opening to the Upside Down appearing in the streets, and even the helicopter being pulled into that alternate dimension. There, Demogorgons are running around, strange creatures are flying overhead, and a character who looks familiar is seen needing rescue on top of a bus. Players can still complete missions like delivering supplies while staying in the real world, but even that isn’t entirely safe.

The latest update was announced on Xbox Wire as a fun, 1987-style news article from the fictional Hawkins Post. The article focuses on a new helicopter tour service operating over the town. While we wait for the next part of the Stranger Things story and learn the fate of some characters, the article reveals that Murray Bauman, the show’s conspiracy expert, is involved with the tours. The helicopter shown in the update’s trailer even has a special “Hawkins Heli-Tour” logo on it, adding to the experience.

The crossover update is now available to download for free, but you’ll need to make sure your game is fully updated first. If you have Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you already have access. With the recent release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PlayStation 5 on December 8th, there are many opportunities to experience the Stranger Things content.
